Thats real bad news. I will track any suspicious offers (the special way I can, being IT security pro) and let you know when spot anything.
Greek market is so tiny that is out of the question.

Re: Stolen Gear

Since Rich is insured, catching them or not should be just a matter of justice.

So, a hypothetical question...

Is it better to tell the diving community about the theft and risk the items being "too hot", and dumped in a ditch somewhere, or to keep the theft quiet and watch for someone trying to sell them?

That depends on how many thieving scum bags read Rebreather World and other forums with the info on.
If its gets dumped at least no one else gets stung, if no one knows ow will anyone know to look out for it.

Re: Stolen Gear

Stealing such speacialist gear to sell in the same country would indicate farm animal level stupidity... okay they are dumb enough to steal but thats a different debate.Like a fine art theft stuff like this would have to leave the country within a few days or stay hidden a long time, either way my vote is a shipping container somewhere, in a yard or on its way to the far/middle east.I think we have to feel most sorry about Richies personnal kit going missing, insurance is one thing but tried, tested and modified kit at this level is a b*gger to replace.

Personally i think we should always shout about stolen kit so ' it's so hot it gets dumped' then people will get the idea there is no money in nicking it in the first place.
I dont belive that people would knowingly buy this kit but if we all keep checking then if it does turn up it can be traced back.

Is there a list / directory of stolen kit anywhere that the public/shops/boats/ test centres can compare against when any kit turns up?
ie in 9 months time a 3lt dumpy turns up for test (which it will) they run the serial number and find its previously been nicked?
or i'm about to buy one off ebay and can run the number myself?

That's a very good point. However, I'm torn between whether your average thief will do the research first and then nick stuff, or nick stuff and then find out how to get rid of it.

I would certainly be telling manufacturers and dive shops in the area, and mates. However, I just don't think thieves are necessarily that bright or that aware of how saleable/unsaleable stuff is before they nick it and so I don't think we'll ever get to the stage where they know there is no money in stealing dive stuff. Likewise, I don't see them being "International Dive Thieves" and crating it all off to Sharm.

I like the idea of a list of stolen stuff with serial numbers. This would help the unfortunate person who may otherwise buy the gear in good faith. Should it be discovered that it is stolen, they lose the kit AND their money as it belongs to the original owner or their insurance company.

Did Ian ever get his stolen Boris back btw?

hey Fin,

sme here for Cyprus. a very tight market as well, but then again, how do you spot something? u see a diver using a meg (for example) and is a new guy you never seen before. so, how do you go up to him and find out.?

i think the companies should install some electronic identity, something like the VR3s have, so when one needs to get assistance from the factory or an agent, then if reported it can easily be caught.

i hope all is found. i suspect a cheap sale of parts in the coming months...

Subtle ........ but I like your thinking ! Problem is in this Country a 'victim' has less rights than a paedophile. A more stealthy approach is required ....

My suggestion would be to take the toe raggs for a deep dive on their newly acquired kit ...... without training ...... forget the dry suit ..... a pair of speedos should be fine ........ the kit would have to brought back obviously ....
