I'm absolutely certain it came from them.My anti-spam/phish software has eBAY and PayPal (along with a few others, including my bank, brokerage, etc) on "heightened security" - any email purporting to come from them has to pass DNS verification while the SMTP protocol is active or it gets tossed. Basically, the SMTP receiver looks at the message, validates that its a "high security required" message, then checks the peer address of the open connection against both forward and reverse DNS. If validation cannot be successfully completed the message gets binned - I never see it. I also manually verified it because it was suspicious to receive such a message AND opened a browser independently and hand-typed the eBAY address (since I can't follow a link anyway from the terminal progam); my account had indeed been locked and I had to follow their password-recovery procedure.

I'm getting ready to sell some stuff and was going to use ebay but the number of threads I've seen about fraud is making me think 2x. If there is a problem with ebay commiting fraud or illegal practices, they need to be reported. If it is a bunch of hackers in another country, I can say that the federal authorities won't be spending much time on that unless it's major or includes a threat to the US.
