Here is a little write up I found.Possibly one of the best preserved wrecks in the world the Gunilda is one of the most prestigious wrecks in the Canadian Great Lakes. The Gunilda now rests at a depth of 270'/82M at the base of McGarvey Shoal in Lake Superior. The luxury steam yacht Gunilda was the flagship of the New York Yacht Club and the pride of it's owner, oil baron William Harkness, one of the wealthiest men in the world at the turn of the century. However a streak of bravura and a penchant for cutting corners, sent this vessel to a watery grave in the Great Lakes. Harkness took his family and some friends on a cruise up the Great Lakes during the summer of 1911, with plans to fish for speckled trout in Lake Nipigon, Ontario, accessible from the northern edge of Lake Superior via Schreiber Channel. En route, the handsome vessel drew stares of admiration for her fine mahogany wood accents and gold scrollwork on her immaculate white hull. Harkness put into Jackfish Bay, Ontario, to inquire about retaining a local guide to navigate the channel, but balked at the fee. Sure that his crew of 20 could ease the steel-hulled yacht safely through the final leg of the journey to the fishing grounds, he ordered Captain Alexander-Corckum to "carry on!" At his command, the majestic vessel steamed out across the bay on the foggy morning of August 29 on what was to become her last voyage. The ship was 5 miles/8 kilometres from Rossport, Ontario, when it slammed into McGarvey Shoal. No one was injured, but the Gunilda was stranded with 80 feet of her hull perched atop the rock, with the remainder dangling precipitously over nearly 300 feet of water. Harkness took a launch ashore to arrange for the area's heftiest tugboat, the James Waylan, to pull the Gunilda off the shoal. The tug captain arrived with a barge in tow, then recommended that a second barge be brought in to form a sling to stabilize the stranded yacht. But Harkness refused to pay for the extra watercraft, so the rescue attempt proceeded without this precaution. A sling was tied to the James Waylan, which tugged mightily to loosen the yacht. When at last it broke free, the Gunilda keeled to starboard. Her masts hit the water, and, as the vessel filled with water, the Harkness family, friends and crew scrambled to safety aboard the tugboat. Within minutes, the flagship of the New York Yacht Club found a new home at the base of McGarvey Shoal. A depth of 265 feet/80.8 meters and Canada's stringent regulation of its underwater resources ensures that the Gunilda gets few visitors. The craft, now protected as a Heritage Shipwreck, resisted attempts to raise her, and has since been explored by two submersibles, a hard-hat diver and few scuba divers, at least officially. Attaining credentials from Canada's Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Ontario Provincial Police, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Maritime Heritage Office and the Crown Attorneys Office to visit the wreck can require years of paperwork. Only pictures can be taken. Penetration is not permitted, and even silt is to be left undisturbed as a way of preserving the wreck. Divers who complete the necessary paperwork and training are rewarded with views of a pristine beauty of a world'class yacht. It was the seeming lack of damage that prompted Harkness to waive off the extra barge that might have kept her afloat. Today she rests upright and nearly level at the base of the nearly vertical wall of the shoal, which climbs to within 1 foot/ 30 centimeters of the surface of the lake. Her clipper ship-like bow is pointed nearly due north at 355 degrees, still heading toward the mouth of the Schreiber Channel. In the Community of Rossport you can visit their Gunilda gift shop and museum located by the fishing docks that sells Gunilda souvenirs and prints. Ramage & Ferguson Ltd., Scotland, built the Gunilda in Leith, in 1897 according to the plans of designers Cox & King. Her overall length was 195 feet (59.4 meters), her breadth was 24 feet, 7 inches (6.25 meters) and she had a draft of 12 feet, six inches (3.8 meters) with a gross of 385 tonnes. The Gunilda was powered by a triple expansion 27-inch (68.6 centimetres) stroke steam engine fuelled by two 160 pound pressure turbine boilers and could make 14 knots per hour.
