Wink PBY Catalina Found in Lake Mead

NPS SRCU team found a PBY this last December that went down in Lake Mead decades ago. The wreck is in about 185' of water and is in two pieces. Coordinates were made available at a meeting tonight.

Two bodies have never been recovered or found from this wreck. NPS has opened this site up for technical divers.

Thanks to NPS and Dave Conlin of SRCU for finding and sharing this cool wreck site.

Sweet. Something else to see aside from the B-29. May have to make a trip one of these days.

Sounds cool Steve. I am assuming that you have those coordinates? I may have to bring a group down the road from Salt Lake in a couple weeks to check it out. I'll give you a call.

regards,
Randy

Yes we do Randy...funny story..but the sheet the NPS gave out last night had the coordinates listed at N 35D 41.978', W 105D 57.181' which is in Sante Fe New Mexico??? I called them and it was a mistake.....they are issuing new coordinates this Thursday which will be the first day the plane will be open for diving.

Hey Curt: As of the meeting last night...the NPS is finalizing a management plan thay say will be done in about two weeks. At that point it will be published in Federal Bid procedure. Formal submitted proposals will be evalauted and two Commercial Use Temporay 3 month permits will be issued. After they see how the two commercial operators perform.. a decision will be made as to how to continue to operate the diving of the B-29. They were hoping for a tentative start to dive date of May 1, 2007. Keep in mind that the B-29 elevation is at 970'. Lake Levels are currently at about 1129'..and dropping. By my math that makes the depth to the plane about 159' to the mud. So this site may be within recreational depths in the next year to 18 months or so.

Hope this helps.... tell Mel hello...not sure if she remembers or not but I did my Trimix Instructor training out here with her and a group a few years back.....
