Re: Side Scan Sonar Wanted

Since we are already on the subject of Side Scan Sonar, I was wondering if anyone knows of any literature out there about Side Scan Sonar??

I am aware that there is tons of information online, but I was just wondering if there is a book out, or some other publication. I tried Amazon but didn't really see anything.

thanks,
RBN

Yep, here are two bibles:
SOUND UNDERWATER IMAGES: A Guide to the Generation and Interpretation of Side Scan Sonar Data, by John Perry Fish and H. Arnold Carr (1990), is a highly acclaimed text and reference book for users of side scan sonar imaging systems within the scientific, marine engineering, oceanographic and Naval communities. It is a valuable resource to individuals and institutions involved with underwater imaging, sonar design, construction and application as well as those concerned with the collection and interpretation of side scan sonar data. Used in classrooms and at-sea, Sound Underwater Images is a definitive guide for the generation and interpretation of sonar data. The text takes the reader from the early design of sonar systems to how they have advanced to the present day side scan sonar images.
Chapter topics include:
- Underwater Sound as a Tool
- Applications of Side Scan Sonar
- Theory of Operation
- System Configurations
- At-Sea Operations
- Record Interpretation
- Mosaics
- Detail Mapping
- Sonar Targets
Features: an Appendix with common calculations and tables useful during sonar survey operations, 190 pages, 170 B&W illustrations, and spiral binding to lay flat when open.
  • SOUND REFLECTIONS: Advanced Applications of Side Scan Sonar by John Perry Fish and H. Arnold Carr (2001), is a more advanced reference text that discusses the more complex and demanding applications of side scan sonar. Once the sonar user is familiar with the concepts and theories explained in the basic primer text, Sound Reflections is the next logical reference text to use. The book provides an in-depth look at the diverse range of sonar applications and discusses advanced data interpretation. Different sonar design technologies are outlined with examples from a variety of sonar types. Sound Reflections is comprehensive in its presentation and authoritative in providing field-proven principles.
    Chapter topics include:
    - Developments in Side Scan Sonar Technology
    - Bandwidth and Chirp Sonar
    - Imaging Small Structures
    - Imaging Large Structures
    - Image Density in Sonar Data
    - Sonar Phenomenon
    - Aircraft and Aeronautical Debris
    - Imaging Wide Area Formations
Features: a Glossary of sonar terms and their meanings, 272 pages, color, 422 illustrations, hard binding.
Both Sound Underwater Images and Sound Reflections are available from:
    The Institute for Marine Acoustics
American Underwater Search & Survey, Ltd.
    Box 768
    Cataumet, MA USA 02534

Re: Side Scan Sonar Wanted

I had some PM's along the way, asking me about how we got the SportsScan to fly in a straight line.
As the unit comes out of the factory, I doubt that anyone is able to get it stable during towing. So this is what we did.
Made a new body so the total lenght of the unit comes to 1,7m. At the tail end we put some large cross fins to keep it from rolling.
Currently we are using with up to 200m cable on a winch, but you can not do that without changing the electronics.
The longer cable length also serves to smoothe out any sharp movements that comes from heavy seas. Plus it allows you to put the towfish deeper during scanning made faster than the recomended 2 knots at the factory. We currently do large scanning operations at 6 knots, and slowing down to 4,5 knots when there is a interesting hit we want to get a better picture of.
That's as slow as the boat will go on a single engine.

So for any SportsScan or Yellowfish owners out there that is having problems with stability during flight, feel free to copy our idea, it will give you a really nice working unit. And still pretty cheap.

Might I ask what the total cost you have into your unit is? Thanks.

Re: Side Scan Sonar Wanted

With cable, electronics modification and everything. About 25-30% more than the purchace price of the unit.
Cable is somewhat expencive.

This is not including a nice cable winch with remote control and everything. They are surprisingly expencive to have fittet on a boat

Well, the first book looks very interesting, but holy smokes, very expensive "bible"! Wondering if a library might have it.
thanks for the info.

How about a report, as one is on my short list of items for EXPLORER.

Re: Side Scan Sonar Wanted

Do not know so much about it.
It’s a Swedish company how makes them.

The pic from Hindenburg is a wreck at about 38-45 meters depth and the Holländare is about 15-25 meters depth.
When the search was made they had about 30 meters cabel out and the sonar was set to scan 2 X 150 meters and the speed was 4 knots.

The god thing with that sonar is that if you find some thing you can set it to scan 75 meters on only one side and then the MHz is times 3 then.
