"Devoli" Tanker in south Italy - Sicily

Trapani-Sicily

Nice Dive to -143 meters of water onto the “Cofano" wreck
(Cofano is the name of an hill on the coastline )

On the 19th and 20th of August a team made up of 8 people carried out two exploration dives around the hull of a shipwreck, still unidentified, which lays on the sea bed at 143 meters depth off "Monte Cofano".
The area is well known to local fishermen but until now, no diver had ever been down to look around, due to the fact that the wreck is so far below. We think it should be a tanker named “Devoli” which has been sunk by a british submarine called “Splendid” on march 1943. The shipwreck is perfectly upright on the sea bed, and in a pretty good state judging by the first dives.
During those two dives done by the well known underwater photographer Antonello Paone, he managed to take a few minutes of film and several photographs. Never the less research of the exact identity and history of this ship are still in act, including forth coming dives, hopefully in October, to complete video and photographic documentation of the so called “Relitto del Cofano”.

Dives have been done by Antonello Paone as deep sea photographer and Fabio Manganelli, deep cameraman, both of which have gone down to minus 143 meters of water. The average depth on the deck is 135mtrs.
To back them up in this arduous achivement ing. Lino Viccica, Salvo Gurrieri and Nicola Gucciardi, completed the team. Moreover, Roberto Monticciolo and Renato Borgonuovo, helped the team from the surface. We have had the extreme pleasure of having aboard the well know deep water photographer and journalist Maria Pia Pezzali, who took an active part in the team. The divers used both the inspiration Classic with an heliox10 as diluent and sevaral other heliox as bailouts
The divers managed to stay on the sea bed for 25 minuts and the run times of each immersion was over 5 hours.

Here you can see some shoots on my website ( sorry but there is only an Italian version for the time being)

Thanks and

Congratulations...

Looks like a great dive, and even great surface conditions as well. What more could anyone asks for...

Congratulations!

Respect for taking on such an expedition dive from a RIB, that's a lot of gear stowed in a small boat!
