![]() | Re: Oriskany Well really the trick is leave ealry get your spot before they get there. there slow moo boats for the most part except the Ynot. On my trip, that I did not get an ealry start. I just asked if I could tie in. I was the last boat though and i did have to go fetch at one point. But if I were diveing a breather, it really would not matter. you should be able to go up current of the "o" drop 140 of anchor rode and you should drift right in to her. Check the hook for easy release on your way back up. Only on OC (ie; limited gas) should you be concerned about hooking right on the tower or island which ever you prefer. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Oriskany If I have someone up on top competent not to cut me into hamburger I'll drop in with my scooter directly over the tower and then shoot a bag when I'm done and drift the deco. That's easier than dealing with the CF of a bunch of boats, and on a wreck that size, if you have a scooter, is pretty much idiot-proof. If I get there and nobody else is there then I'll go ahead and drop 120' of rode and grapple the tower, then tie in once I get down there. But all-in on a small boat with a popular spot I prefer to do a drifting deco and "hot drop" the dive if I'm comfortable with the people I'm diving with.

Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Oriskany so does the current on the wreck run across the deck or run the length of the boat? if it runs across the deck , you should be able to grapple anywhere along the side of it with 150' of rope. I'm guessing the surface current matches the one on the wreck but know the wind may blow the boat in a different direction.

The four times I've dropped on it, light current was coming straight down the flight deck, perfect for flight ops! < trusty A-7D Corsair...with Rolls-Royce engines, no less!Although, (hanging his head in shame ), I was without me trusty compass, so can't provide a heading. Here's some fab pics of the sinking and fresh bottom pics, for those who haven't had the pleasure...might be an interminable load on dial-up, but well worth it. http://www.ussoriskany.com/id29.html Rick |

Since we're diving on a Sat, wonder if it's better to go later then early... after the charters have left.....

The Great Carrier Reef (sorry 'bout that ) isn't anything like those underwater zoos down in the Keys. I'd LOVE to do it on a scooter !!!! Farthest I've swam from the bridge is to where the LSO (Landing Signal Officer) hung out--man that must have been cool, guiding jets into controlled crashes! HUA!Rick |

Be advised that ALL of the area charters are booking well in advance. ; ring 'em up. The Great Carrier Reef (sorry 'bout that ) isn't anything like those underwater zoos down in the Keys. | Earning the green stuff.. Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Oriskany So has anyone talked about tying an u/w buoy or float from the bow and/or stern? Then run a line from it to the tower, a long run to be sure, but a bigger target to catch and tie into. Do it deep enough to be out of the way and not upset the coast guard. There is a wreck in Marathon sorta like that.... the thunderbolt. There is a barrel floating below the water that attaches to the bow. Pretty sure there's another one on the stern. Barrels are 15-20 feet below the water so you don't hit it but can swim in and tie off easy enough. For the O-boat, you'd need to put the barrels deep - tower depth - but could then run lines across. And they don't need to be the bow and stern. Just something to give you more of a target and a way to space boats out. I'm guessing there will be more and more divers/boats out there over the years. Can't see a line of 10 boats all tied off in a line.

![]() ![]() | Re: Oriskany Well, first post here, but my OC dive yesterday was what got me looking into this whole thing in the first place. We saw a couple of guys on CCR rigs who dropped in about 20 minutes before us. We were down around the island for the most part and dropped down to the flight deck, but never got more than 113fsw. Saw the CCR guys on the aft end headed down towards the screws it looked like. We were down for about 35 minutes and were back topside for a good half hour before those guys came back up. Unbelievable, simply unbelievable. As far as mooring goes, there are a couple of bouys about 25-30 feet down. One is off the flight deck and one from the aft end of the island as I recall. Seemed easy enough to find fiddling with my handheld GPS. We sent a guy down to tie in and it was pretty simple. I can't say you guys have roped me into this CCR stuff yet, but I sure am gleaning the info I can from this site! |
