Iron, Steel, Steam - Sydney Project presenting!

For all rust junkies out there in the land of Oz ...

The Australian National Maritime Museum is running a seminar on shipwrecks under the title "Iron, Steel & Steam". The dates and locations are:

Melbourne: 28/29/30 June
Fremantle: 26/27 June
Sydney: 30 June - 1 July

More details can be found here: http://www.anmm.gov.au/ironsteelsteam.htm

The Sydney Project will have two presenters: Mark Spencer, renowned underwater photographer (and MK15.5 owner), Samir Alhafith, Project Leader - Sydney Project (Inspo Classic). Mark will talk about The Birchgrove Park, The Catterthun, deepwater shipwreck archaeology, Samir's presentation will be about The Sydney Project Team and the SS Cumberland, Liberty ship William Dawes and the Bega.

It's great to see that private initiatives like the Sydney Project are being recognised for their contribution to the discovery, documentation and preservation of shipwrecks in Oz. The Sydney Project have had a good run in the past couple years, with the discovery of a number of wrecks in 75-130msw. Latest achievement was the discovery of what could be the wreck of the "Iron Knight" in 125msw off the southcoast of Australia. The Sydney Project divers inspected the site and confirmed it to be a
shipwreck. Initial thoughts are that it is the freighter (BHP) Iron Knight, torpedoed by Japanese I-class submarine I-21 on 8 Feb 1943. The vessel sank in 2 minutes whilst in a convoy of other vessels travelling north from Whyalla (SA) to Newcastle (NSW). The escort vessel was HMAS Mildura and HMAS Townsville. Survivors in raft for 12 hours before being picked up by French destroyer Le Triomphant.

This is a significant discovery and adds to the groups discovery of the US Liberty ship William Dawes torpedoed by I-11 in 1942 off Tathra and discovered in Oct 2004.

This is a bit of a plug for The Sydney Project, and yes, I am a member. (http://www.sydneyproject.com/)

Vielen Dank Stefan!

And just to continue the plug for the Sydney Project: The Sydney Morning Herald has an article about the discovery of the wreck of the "Iron Knight" by the SP last weekend. The article can be found here: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...e#contentSwap1
