That's a few more wrecks they'll make national monuments out of and we won't be permitted on without a "special permit".

The nation is going broke and they are pissing away money playing .... our tax dollars at work.

Absolutely agreed 110%. What a waste of resources. There's zero to learn about any of the three subs... just zero. "Marine Life"? It's *exactly* the same as what's on every other piece of detritus on the bottom there. I cannot believe that anyone funded this. If anything, it'll put the location of U-701 into the "really" public domain and will ensure more rapid "exploration" after the survey ends. So far the location has been "quietly kept". That'll end. What a shame. As for U-85 and U-352: With literally tens of thousands of dives having been done on them already, WTF do they expect to find? "War Graves"? With all due respect, they have been destination tourist-dives for 30 years. Any "respect' for them as war graves is about 40 years too late.

The impetus for this is likely to get baseline data to support/rationalize the expansion of the Monitor NMS. For those that don't know, there is an effort to expand the NMS beyond management of the USS MONITOR into the "Graveyard of the Atlantic National Marine Sanctuary." Nothing definitive yet as far as boundaries or prohibitions/regulations, but everything could be on the table (closed areas, research-only areas, recreational access permits, etc.); just look at what has been going on at Stellwagen NMS.

This (US) *USED TO BE* the land of the free. We are slowly becoming the land of everything is illegal unless it is micro managed by some bureaucratic govt. agency that needs to justify it's existance.

Pretty soon they'll be making sanctuarys on highways where fatal accidents ocurred and outlawing the sale of used car parts if they came from a fatal wreck.

But of course none of this really matters because when diesel hits $20.00 a gallon only the bureaucrats will be able to dive .... on the tax payers nickel of course.

Any chance that this is a back-door attempt to force LOST into effect? To the *best of my knowledge* this was stalled in the Senate last year. May be a reach and I may be wrong, but it came to mind.

I am with everyone else that this development is completely unnecessary as I don't understand what they think they'll see and find that hasn't already been seen and found. This does have the potential to impact the mid-Atlantic charter boats and us divers who enjoy the service they provide; though one has to wonder for how much longer given the cost of fuel and no real end in sight .

I was about to suggest you come over here - but then I realise we're in the same situation. Right now, a "tidy up" of recent fisheries conservation is neatly, and almost silently, going to ban all spearfishing in UK waters with no consultation and no apparent request to do so. Lumped in with changes made to restrict "destructive fishing methods". So, eliminate the most sustainable form of fishing there is, criminalise at a stroke normally law-abiding citizens and cost the country £???? when this pointless section of fisheries law has to be enforced because some hippy-type dobs someone in!

...about the expansion of the MONITOR NMS?
Sorry, but that's definitely in the works.
