| DE/MD/NJ Wreck Diver Current Rebreather/s: | Re: NOAA and Partners to Explore German Subs Sunk off North Carolina During World War I was about to suggest you come over here - but then I realise we're in the same situation. Right now, a "tidy up" of recent fisheries conservation is neatly, and almost silently, going to ban all spearfishing in UK waters with no consultation and no apparent request to do so. Lumped in with changes made to restrict "destructive fishing methods". So, eliminate the most sustainable form of fishing there is, criminalise at a stroke normally law-abiding citizens and cost the country £???? when this pointless section of fisheries law has to be enforced because some hippy-type dobs someone in! It makes perfect sense..... It's obvious Spear Fishing, that takes maybe a few thousand fish a year, is the root cause of low fish stocks... It couldn't possibly be the commercial interests that scoop up every living thing in the path of their Trawl Nets over thousands of miles of Ocean. Disgusted of England I guess you just don't get it... It's the new math! Richie |

| Re: NOAA and Partners to Explore German Subs Sunk off North Carolina During World War The impetus for this is likely to get baseline data to support/rationalize the expansion of the Monitor NMS. For those that don't know, there is an effort to expand the NMS beyond management of the USS MONITOR into the "Graveyard of the Atlantic National Marine Sanctuary." Nothing definitive yet as far as boundaries or prohibitions/regulations, but everything could be on the table (closed areas, research-only areas, recreational access permits, etc.); just look at what has been going on at Stellwagen NMS. What a crock! Thanks for the info Barney! I certainly hope that this doesn't gain momentum. The last thing we need is more red tape getting in the way of diving.Brian

| Re: NOAA and Partners to Explore German Subs Sunk off North Carolina During World War The Monitor Marine Sanctuary Council meetings are generally held in Newport News VA and are open to the public. There is always a public comment period and they have been open to ideas. Historically there has been a very low attendance by divers. Usually me and one or two other divers attend and make our comments. I suggest divers get involved at the meetings and make your views known to them. |

As if high fuel prices weren't enough, now this ugly development. I guess NOAA and the Navy trashed the Monitor site so thoroughly that they need other wrecks off Hatteras to "preserve." |

| Re: NOAA and Partners to Explore German Subs Sunk off North Carolina During World War Dave, I've shot you a couple PMs, but no reply. I'm west coast currently. Finishing up classes for my 3rd Mate Unlimited. Cel. Nav next two weeks and I'm done! BUT I'm either out to the NW Hawaiian Islands for a month or AK. So I probably won't be back on the east coast till September, still gonna have the boat around then? I hear you got a lot of neat toys that I'd love to see... Best, Offgas |

| Re: NOAA and Partners to Explore German Subs Sunk off North Carolina During World War I think this is great! I love seeing my tax dollars getting thrown around like this. My only question is: How do I get on one of these trips? Me, Al Gore and some polar bears are going link-up with Code Pink, come down there protest all you divers tearing up these wrecks. Just kidding -- I don't know any polar bears. |

| EXPLORER ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: NOAA and Partners to Explore German Subs Sunk off North Carolina During World War Yeah, I was jumping to conclusions... 2008 Battle of the Atlantic Expedition Quote: (Originally Posted by NOAA) The data collected may in the future allow for the implementation of policy that will mitigate impact and degradation to the sites but will in no way exclude anyone who wishes to experience this part of their history first hand. What is interesting is that the original discoverer of the U-701 kept the coordinates quiet, and though others stumbled across the wreck in 2003-2004, the numbers were not widely distributed, but here NOAA goes ahead and publishes the numbers! This is part one of a multi-year project. Though this year’s focus is on U-boats due to concern over looting, Allied vessels lost during the Battle of the Atlantic are also a primary objective for study. They will be the focus of subsequent research and fieldwork, however, some allied vessels will be visited during this year's field expedition in order to formulate a similar document for future projects. In case anyone is interested, here are the questions they hope to answer during this year's project: Quote: (Originally Posted by NOAA) Do the historical descriptions of the sinking events match the condition of the sunken vessels? Do the historical descriptions of the sinking locations match the sunken vessels? Are the sites in question Type 7-B and Type 7-C WWII era German U-boats? Can the sites be identified and are they the U-352, U-701, and U-85? Are alterations to the hull structure due to the sinking event, site formations processes, or divers? And finally, do the sites warrant further investigation? |
