Andre

I can put the chain within 10 feet fo where we were. YOUR job is to tie it thru the same porthole and to send back last years mooring chain and caribiner on the lift bag so we can use it in 2009.... . AFAIK the chain and whatever is left of the mooring is still there, as it was re-used last year but not retrieved at the end of the season.

Be careful.... this ain't Florida. More than one 'furriner' has come here and gone home on the swim platform face-first in his sleeping bag.

Please...

Because none of the local folks from the Northeast have ever died on the Doria, right?

Come to think of it, I guess that means that when them Northeast folks come down to Florida, they find the conditions so benign that they couldn't possibly hurt themselves here.

Can we get a shovel in here?

Re: Andrea Doria?

Thank you everyone for your replies.

While I'm not booked with Dave's outfit for this trip, I'm sure I would have had a great time with.

As for conditions, this will not be the deepest dive I've done. It will be the coldest. Viz? We've all seen pea soup. Distance from shore, while defineatly the furthest out I've dived, by no means have all other dives been benign. As for current, well, there is plenty of strong current down here in S FL to have cut our teeth on. The big thing for me on this dive is putting it all together.

The Doria was a goal for me for many years. However, the desire to dive her faded over time as my experience grew. An opportunity came knocking, as I was not looking. It gives me a chance to dive a wreck that is an icon with a diver that I respect deeply for their accomplishments. I couldn't say no.

Thanks to those that posted insight and tips. I look forward to reading more posts about the same.

Eric

Hi Dave,

What sort of bailout strategy is preferred for diving the Doria using CCRs'.

Thanks,

z

I can't speak for any other boat, but aboard EXPLORER, we:

Drop a 100 pound clump weight straight down from the davit at the entrance, with a crossover line at about 100 feet to the mooring line. Diver jumps in, hand on line, and makes descent down to the clump. Saves loads of struggle in the current, and allows us to do the followin:

20 feet down on the descent line we have (2) open circuit regulators fed by surface supplied 02 (2 J Bottles) for emergency deco.

At the clump weight, we stage a bottle of rich trimix (50% 02) for emergency "grab and deco"

At the tie-in to the wreck, we stage another 80 of 20% 02 trimix in case of need.

Divers each carry bailout, typically a single alu-80, sometimes two. Depends on the diver.

Although we do tow a RIB boat for emergency diver-chase, if you come up off of the mooring and we need to chase you down we gladly charge a $1000 "Thanks for making my mate go to sea 130 miles offshore in a small outboard rubber boat to chase your sorry ass down for 2 hours and 3 miles of drift thru the shipping lanes" fee....payable directly to the mate. . Divers WILL come up the mooring, and we stage all sorts of gas to make things safe. AFAIK, no other boat here does anything like this with staged gas. On the basic cattle-car it's not like this.

Marv,

You coming back down to FL this year at all? I'm thinking about hosting a trip out to the Oriskany.
