Re: Hitler's lost fleet

From U Boat operations of the Second World War - Kenneth Wynn

Quote:
.... was partially dismantled at Kiel and the stripped-down hull, weighing 140 tons, was taken on a raft made of five pontoons to Brunsbuttel, via the Kiel canal. From there the raft was taken up the Elbe as far as Dresden, where the hull was unshipped and placed on two 70 ton road transporters.

It then made a slow jurney down the autobahn as far as Ingolstadt, where it was again loaded on a raft to be towed doen the Danube to Linz.

After arrival at Linz, the boat was re-assembled and then towed between two barges down the Danube to Romania. At Galati the boat was recommissioned.
Apparenty the Germans offered to sell the boats to the Turkish government, who refused to buy them

Re: Hitler's lost fleet

Nice. As Type IIB's, known as "Canoes", they were coastal boats, and will be AFAIK the one ones of their type to be located in divable depths. Most of these never left the Baltic, where they were used as training boats at the school, and so were not exposed to possible war loss. Interestingly enough, they were single compartment boats, without separate watertight compartments fore and aft, and from what I have read were very well liked by their crews for their ease of handling and rapidity of submergence.

From a diving standpoint this is good news. From a U-Boat archeologists standpoint it is superb news. The Sharkhunters will be happy!

Re: Hitler's lost fleet

This is great news! The salinity in the Black Sea is much lower than the ocean's which makes for good wreck preservation, on the other hand I'm sure they are covered in zebra mussels just like any other wreck in that sea. I dive wrecks off the Romanian coast every year with my brother and it's pretty interesting diving. I even got a piece of china from a chinese freighter .
Anyone know the GPS locations of these subs? Have they been published?

Re: Hitler's lost fleet

They were scuttled. In the case of a sub the boat can be made to sink just be flooding all the air tanks, so it's possible that the shallower ones might be completely intact (or so I've read). Maybe even the one at 1000'.

Re: Hitler's lost fleet

It appears that the finder is presenting on the subject at the International Shipwreck Conference in Plymouth this coming weekend - Saturday 9 Feb. If you're in the UK it seems a good way to spend a few hours and £15.

If anyone's going, please share what you learn.

Re: Hitler's lost fleet

yo all

Found an article about this in German that has been published by the SPIEGEL online magazine
U-Boot auf der Autobahn - einestages

and some photos
U-Boot auf der Autobahn - einestages on the German Autobahn with heavy duty transports with 32 wide full rubber tires and up to 4 pulling engines the trasnports made the 300 km / 181 miles between the Elbe river by Dresden and the Danube ( Donau ) river by Ingolstadt. This photo is from 1942 in Dresden Neustadt on the Autobahn where a special ramp was constructed to allow the sub transports onto the Autobahn

Entladen bei Ingolstadt - einestages in Bavaria ( Ingolstadt ) the subs where taken of the road and put on barges onto the Danube ( Donau ) river

U-Boot am Gartenzaun - einestages the heavy transports had a speed of 8 km - 6 miles an hour and wher very tedious. Many times it came to bottleneck situations on the roads. This picture shows a sub under tarps with a torpedo tube showing. The author asked himself if the bypassers would have recognized what was transported on the road.

greetings
Matt
