| Re: Liberty ship -location of bell Can anyone tell me/describe exactly where the ships bell was located on a standard liberty ship? Matthew, thanks Matthew You'll find it in the last place you looked for it...... Seriously, as these things were about 440 odd foot long, there could be 3 bells, though only one should be named. Having spent a number of dives looking for the Bell of the Flying Enterprise, to no avail, I wish you good luck. The problem with bells is that if the ship rolls they can be bashed off and of course who is to say that the bell wasn't removed and secured in a locker (often happened in rough weather). This may help you navigate your way around the bugger: Liberty Ship Details I hope you find them all. Cheers, Dave Cooper.

| Re: Liberty ship -location of bell Can anyone tell me/describe exactly where the ships bell was located on a standard liberty ship? thanks Matthew All the way forward on the bow (like every other ship). The reason they are carried at all is to act as a fog signal at anchor, a ship carries a bell forward and a gong aft.... the bell is rung then the gong is clanged, so others can hear where the bow and stern are in a fog. See "International Rules of the Road"...... This is Rule 35 (G), which although a modern ititeration has not changed since the early 1900's.... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + (g) A vessel at anchor shall at intervals of not more than 1 minute ring the bell rapidly for five seconds. In a vessel 100 meters or more in length the bell shall be sounded in the forepart of the vessel and immediately after the ringing of the bell the gong shall be sounded rapidly for about 5 seconds in the after part of the vessel. A vessel at anchor may in addition sound three blasts in succession, namely one short, one long and one short blast, to give warning of her position and of the possibility of collision to an approaching vessel. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + And the bells were mounted on fixed brackets and not dismounted in weather. The forepeak lookkout had the responsibility for the ringing of the bell in fog. Ships may carry other bells too, for various reasons (IE ceremonial purposes or to ring the bell over the 1MC intercom every half hour according to "The Bells". These 1MC signals were usually done with a very small chime, not a bell as we would understand it. On warships there will be a Quarterdeck bell as well, on the Portside Gangplank for ceremonial use when receiving visitors, etc. As the 'Libs were wartime expedient freighters I doubt that they carried more than what was absolutely required, especially since the material (bronze) was a critical material. Bottom line: Look up forward...... Dave

| Re: Liberty ship -location of bell Can anyone tell me/describe exactly where the ships bell was located on a standard liberty ship? I would look forward of the bridge area which was often the gangway area as well. As mentioned there may be more than one bell and a ceremonial bell may be stowed just about anywhere at sea although they were heavy and probably not moved too far from the brow (gangway).thanks Matthew I never sailed on a liberty ship but did work on the HMCS Cape Breton which in now an artificial reef in Nanaimo and is of similar design.
