| Re: RBW trip Scapaflow 4-11 aug 2007 what airport would one fly into for that trip? exact time of departure? other costs? fills sorb food etc? Ron, never been, would like to go, need more info please I think that coming from The USA you would be best to fly into Glasgow and complete your journey in a hire car driving to either Aberdeen or Scrabster to catch a ferry to Orkney. Allow 2 - 3 hours to Aberdeen, 4 - 6 to Scrabster. The drive to Scrabster is a spectacular one through the highlands. Johns boat is set up for all sorts of tech diving with helium, o2 compressor etc etc onboard. Most charters run saturday to Saturday. Its about a 5 hour drive to Scrabster. The norm is to arrive Scrabster friday and take the ferry (2 hrs) saturday morning. Set your gear up on the boat sat afternoon and then dive sunday - fri. The usual set up in Scapa is to sleep on the boat which returns to harbour each evening. Most boats work on a bed & breakfast catered basis, you then have the choice to cook your own evening meal onboard or to eat in one of the pubs or restaurants in town. I'm sure John would be happy to arrange to supply sorb onboard, or you could order a tub from AP and have it delivered to the boat. most of the boats around Scapa charge about 1p a litre for o2 and 2p for helium. Not cheap, but not really an issue on a CCR. I'm not sure but I suspect it should be possible to hire both bail out and Rebreather cylinders. If John can't provide them there are a couple of dive shops in town who probably can. Hope that helps a little. |

| Re: RBW trip Scapaflow 4-11 aug 2007 An alternative would be to fly to Aberdeen, via some other UK airport, and then get the ferry from Aberdeen to Kirkwall and ask John to pick you up from the ferry. This avoids the long drive but you may have problems with luggage allowances. I dived with John a couple of years ago on OC and want to go back with the rebreather. Unfortunately I have already committed to far too many trips this year. Simon |
