Diving in Holland

Hello all,

I will be working in Holland near Bergen Op Zoom for about 3 months from the middle of January. I was wondering if there are any decent dive sites/inland sites that are near for me to get wet in?

I am recently qualified and would like to get some hours in on my unit so if anyone would like a buddy give me shout.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Happy new year.

John

Re: Diving in Holland

Hi John,

there are lots of places to dive in the "Oosterschelde". We dive in the Oosterschelde around the tides. Half an hour before we go in and get out half an hour after the tide changes. Vis ranges from absolutely 0 to an average of 1.5 meters. Currents can be strong, so not recommended for a CCR beginner.

Other salt water dives but without tides, no current and better vis can be found at the "Grevelingen".

We have some local lakes here in Belgium that we use to practice drills. In Antwerp we have the "Put van Ekeren". Max depth is around 20 meters. In the Ardennes we have several deeper ones.

HTH and

Happy new year,

Peter

Hi John,

There are three main types of locations to dive in Holland:

1. Wreck diving at the North Sea, only by boat, wrong season.

2. Inland lakes. The most dived ones are Oostvoorne (large lake near Rotterdam), Vinkenveen (large lake between Amsterdam and Utrecht), Beldert (small lake near Tiel) and The Green Hills (small lake groene heuvels) near Nijmegen. I dive in Vinkenveen nearly every weekend, feel free to mail me when you want to dive there.

3. Zeeland, mainly shorediving. There is a booklet describing all divesites in Zeeland, but it is in Dutch. Two better known locations are at the north side of the Zeeland bridge and a lake called the Grevelingen. Beware of theft from cars in Zeeland.

In Belgium, there are a number of locations to dive in old stone excevation (?) pits.

Rgs,
Niels Doorduijn

Re: Diving in Holland

Can recommend the Oostvoorne location. Dived it early this year....safe clear and controlled depth...and a great, warm hot chocolate afterwards!!

Juat keep clear of the angler's lines!!

Re: Diving in Holland

I agree with the previous posts.

The Oosterschelde is by far the best place to dive if you want to see the unterwater life we have in the Netherlands. But the Schevelingen is also very nice. Both are very near to each other in the province of Zeeland (south west).

The Oostvoornse meer (meer is lake in Dutch) can have good viz. This is also very near to the Oosterschelde.

You can find some if my underwater images taken in the Oosterschelde and Grevelingen here: http://www.elysia.nl.

I spend most of my weekends in Zeeland (in summer that is). I can always show you some of the best sites. We (my wife and I) both dive an Inspiration. It would be nice to do a rebreather gathering

John,

Bergen Op Zoom is quit near to Antwerp (35 km/25minutes) so once you're settled in give a yell.

We (me, PCDiver and some others) usually do 1 nightdive during the week in the "Put Van Ekeren", a lake near Antwerp, which is ideal to get some experience. You are welcome to join us for a dive and a beer afterwards.

If you feel up to it, you can also join us for some deeper dives in Zeeland or in the Belgian Ardennes (quarries). We can also set you up with HP O2 and sorb.

HTH

Re: Diving in Holland

Hi John,

We're normally diving every weekend in Oostvoorne (mainly the deep part) to try to find new wrecksites (lots of old wood ) and map them. You're more than welcome to join in, just drop a PM if you are interested. Most of the times it's exlusively Rebreather (Inspirations and Touril) guarantees a quiet Sunday

Cheers,
Paul
