Diving In Perue

I have recently married a Peruvian and will probably spend a month every other year there. Can anyone tell me about diving potental within this country and if any one dived here - who with, what they dived, can u hire rebreathers etc.

My next trip will be August 2007 and I need to get planning now as the wife has allocated much of my time to land persuits and if I'm not carefull, I might not get any rebreather time!

Re: Diving In Perue

Sounds like CO hit to me. Chagrined Other. Gotta be careful with that.
Spelling could have been worse, like Purrew.

Can't recall ever reading from someone in Peru diving rebreathers, or having done so on a trip. Best bet is probably to have a look at the IANTD instructor data base (searchable) and contacting other agencies (ANDI, TDI etc) and see if they have instructors somewhere down there.

Good luck, both with your inquiry and spelling.

Welcome to the Latin American Wives Club - I'm also married to a Peruvian.

I'm not aware of much diving activity in Peru, least of all rebreathers. Most of the country is at (very) high altitude and/or very dry (Atacama desert), which will wipe out any diving there.

I believe that it gets very deep very quickly off the coastal plain, which makes me think that there won't be much doing there either.

If you do find something, please let me know. I too will be spending up to a month every two years in Peru, or so my wife informs me ;-)

Luckily, my in-laws live in Sweden. By the looks of it, the diving is stunning there, so we're planning rather more diving there!

Cheers,

Had 3 weeks there in September tho' it was a non-diving trip. But we followed the coast down from Lima as far south as Puerto Inca and it didn't look promising. Cold, murky and at times some serious swell! We went out to the Ballestas Islands and they looked OK if you want to dive with seals. Vis seemed to be in the 3 - 4 metre range and the water felt about 12 Celsius (my guesstimate).

I wonder what effect the guano on the Ballestas has on the local underwater fauna ;-)

Cheers,

Re: Diving In Perue

HI

Basically the whole coast is controlled by a huge upwelling system, therefore the vis is usually rather low. Perhaps you should try Lake Titicaca, the water looked absolutely crystal clear but its really cold. On my trip through the country I haven't seen any diveshops anywhere, not to mention any RBs

Good luck and please keep us posted
