Poor Knights NZ, 14/15th and 21st-23rd October 2006

Hi,

GregV and I will be out at the Poor Knights both of these weekends on the Dive Tutukaka boats (and probably quite a few of the days in-between).

I don't know if any of you Auckland guys fancy joining us for a dive or two?

Mary

Is this offer exclusive to JAFAs, or can anyone join in?

It would be great to see some more RBs on the boat but I guess I figured people wouldn't be coming over from the SI just for the weekend hence the JAFAs comment!

Anyway if you fancy joining us then book yourselves on the DT boats for the weekend

Have a great time, I loved my diving at the Poor Knights.

I didn't dive with DT but with Noel and Gareth the guys that own and run the large cat next to the yacht club.

Cheers

Rich

No worries Mary, kiwidiver and myself have special passports that allow us to travel North of the Bombay Hills.

Should you get enough rebreather divers together, "Dive Toots" may let you have a boat to yourselves which will open up the opportunity to visit some of the really good dive sites around the Poor Knights.

Glad to hear that! Does that mean you will be gracing us with your presence?

Don't think we'll manage to get a whole boat load of RBs but if they are running 2 boats those days we might be able to "suggest" suitable sites on one of the boats .

Which ones in particular were you thinking?

I'm in negotiations with my wife to see when I may be allowed to go. I'll also see what kiwidiver is planning and try to synchronise our times.

As far as good dive sites go, there are too many to name. Unfortunately Dive Toots rarely visit them due to limitations of having novice OC divers on the boats (this is why it's nice to have a boat full of rebreather divers so you can pick your own sites).

Here is a small list of sites that are well worth visiting:
  • Northern Arch (buzzing with shoaling fish, and the occasional shark)
  • Cream Gardens (bronze whaler sharks and busy walls crawling with things to look at)
  • Fred's Pinnacle (shoaling fish and busy walls crawling with things to look at)
  • Serpent Rock (black coral and rocky ridges covered in marine life)
  • Bird Rock (shoaling fish and busy walls crawling with things to look at)
  • Landing Bay Pinnacle (swim-throughs at 50m, plus lots of life on the walls)
  • The Canyon (usually awesome visibility and the opportunity to see black coral)
  • Ngaio Rock (swim-throughs, stingrays and occasional sharks)
  • Imagination Point (encrusted walls - take a camera!)
  • Rikoriko Cave (awesome visibility, with sponges and life forms usually found well below the twilight zone)
  • Tie Dye Arch (exploding with marine life)
  • Sugarloaf Rock (again its just pulsing with marine life)
The last two sites are located at The Squires.
