ideas for shipping gear?

Hello.

This seems like the most suitible forum to ask;
Does anyone have experience in transfering divers gear abroad?

I am working on a dive trip from israel to malta/croatia with some 5-10 tec divers. We will need to ship some rebreathers, drysuits, backplates, regs, etc.
Possibly cylinders, twinsets and v- weights. It is all a question of how much we will end up paying...
On a plane, a rebreather diver will probably take his own rebreather, maybe without cylinders and just pay overweight. OC divers will probably prefer taking just regs and BCDs.
If we use a shipping company, maybe we can send over the whole motherload if it isn't to expensive. Maybe just the basics.
How is it usually organised? Just paying overwheight, or using fedex UPS and so on - or do you have more original ideas?

Thank you -

Bryan

Re: ideas for shipping gear?

Discount Airlines let you pre pay excess baggage at great rates and there is no Customs, storage etc issues. With excess baggage + sports equipment + carry on most go to 70-100kgs depending on the airline

Remember normally a max of 32kgs per piece though

Costs in Asia are typically around $1 per kilo for an international flight

Re: ideas for shipping gear?

How are you (planning on) flying from Israel to Malta? I have no idea if there is a direct flight or not?

If say, via the an international hub, then perhaps get all the excess gear shipped to a freight company in that country, and then collect and only pay the excess luggage from there to Malta?

32kg + hand luggage + a bit of excess, I would think would be enough ex cylinders.

I know Malta Airways (the state carrier) provides very good (cheap) sport equipment allowances.

Re: ideas for shipping gear?

If it is that much I would contact a profesional shipping firm, maybe they have some place left on a cargo plane

ideas for shipping gear?

Problem with shipping you might need a shipping company with a import licensee for the specific type of product you will most likely end up paying customs import taxes handling fees... And then in order to get customs and taxes back once you leave the country the whole sh... Again backwards...more handling fees... I checked it once how to ship some equipment but dropped the idea because it was much cheaper and just easier to pay overweight...

thanks

so it seems easiest just to pay oveweight.
CFU - Are you sure about customs and tax? I am not to farmilliar with these procedures, but as far as I know import taxes and customs are for "new" products, and not for personally owned and used items... And whywould this be different from just walking it through the airport?
I am not yet sure about anyting in this trip - so i don't have a decision on how to do the flight, for example. As soon as I have a basic understanding of the full picture it will be easier to make decisions. The whole thing is kind of new to me - we have a rather small tec community in Israel - maybe 100 - 200 divers who are active - some less, some more - so this kind of thing was never done here before. The travell agencies that organize sport diving safaries are used to completely diffeent things. For my own agenda I am also pushing CCR diving in this trip wich seems to make it more difficult logisticly. So if anyone has ideas, or can list problems, or share experience - I would be glad to hear...

Thanks

Yes I am! I.E. when we moved abroad I had to pay customs on certain electronic device I brought others were free some were one per household, for wooden furniture I had to pay too, other things like scuba gear I was not allowed to ship at all... In case we move back to Germany I will have to provide invoices for all my stuff older than 3y otherwise they can charge me customs and tax regardless of age or usage...

Its different from country to country but that makes it so hard for private purpose because you have to exactly know how and what otherwise you end up paying high sums of whatever or things are stuck in customs for ages...

Its just a lot of PIA in my experience!

Re: ideas for shipping gear?

When I travel with dive gear I fly first class. That way you get a significant increase in your allowed luggage weight, and you get better treatment all round. I have found the price of the ticket is only slightly more than the excess baggage fees.

Re: ideas for shipping gear?

I thought customs & import duty would only apply if you were planing to stay long term. Shipping dive equipment to Malta should not be a problem trough someone like FedEx or you can contact the airline your flying with to see if they do freight rates. I have sent stuff back from Malta to the UK freight and the cost is peanuts compared to excess baggage.

If you do go down the route of flying with the gear pre book the excess it's a lot cheaper than turning up on the day.

I recently booked 25kgs extra for flying to Egypt and that was total of 90 pre booked. On the day it would have been 8/kg each way

Hope that helps
