Northern Michigan Diving in July

Hey everyone,
I will be diving in the Alpena area July 12th thru Aug 1st with Great Lakes Divers. He runs a nice 6 pack and trailers the boat to the closest harbor.
There are still openings for the 14th-18th & 21st-23rd.
Most of them will be in the 160-200 range. Florida, Windiate...all Woodies
I will have my booster and can arrange for sorb and bits from the Rebreather World store.

Please contact Steve at the store directly for booking.

pwl4476 is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Northern Michigan Diving in July

I'll be up there diving during that time as well. I'm booked for July 14-17, but with another dive outfit. The boat will be docked at Presque Isle Harbor.

I've never been to Presque Isle before. Maybe you can give me a few hints?
  • Best place to stay?
  • Weather I can expect?
  • Expected water temps?
Any info you can share will be appreciated.

Re: Northern Michigan Diving in July

Hey Paul,
There are only a few places to stay in Rogers City.. The Driftwood motel is nice, is right on the water and close to the dive shop.
Alpena is quite a bit larger and has many hotels to choose from.
Presque Isle is basically between the two citys on opposite sides.

Surface to where ever the thermocline decides it wants to be, could be in the low 70s, but below that expect high 40s to low 50s.

Weather is the flip of the coin...fog, winds, waves...they come up quick.

I'm pretty sure Bill brings helium and O2 with him, but Steve offers mix fills as well. I will have T's of helium and O2 hooked up to my mini haskel/Golem whips at the shop starting July 11th or 12th and is available for use no problem.

If you need anything like sorb from the RBWS or any other bits, I can transport it for you. I have two kegs of 408 up there and will be bringing 4 more of the RebreatherSorb with me.

I look forward to meeting up with you guys.

Re: Northern Michigan Diving in July

Whats the water temp like in that area in Aug. Does it warm up at all by that time towards the surface where you would be doing deco ??.

Mel and I will be doing the Bradley this summer which I guess is up in that area.

Re: Northern Michigan Diving in July

The Bradley is in Lake Michigan, pretty much across the state from Presque Isle. I'm guessing you guys are going out of Wisconsin with Ron and Team ADM? Get some good stuff to show those of us that can't go yet.

Please take a moment while there for me and think about all the families, including my extended, that lost loved ones that night, it was a devastating blow to my home town and many families lost fathers and grandfathers.

Hey all,
I'm looking for enough people available July 13th-17th with Great Lakes Divers, to make the trip a go, right now it's only myself and another possible guy (pwl4476).
The plan is to dive the Barney, Nothwestern, Windiate, Florida, Defiance, etc...
Call Steve at the shop if you are interested 989-734-7590

Had some great dives with Steve last weekend. Barney (see below) and Northwestern on Saturday and Johnson on Sunday. Water temp was 40F on the bottom and it didn't warm up to 45F until 10 feet. I wouldn't expect low 70's in July, maybe late August or September.

Re: Northern Michigan Diving in July

Please keep in mind that to reduce diver impact on wrecks in the area it is requested that people not do things like grab the handles on the wheel.
