CCR in Bikini Atoll?

I have just booked a trip to the Bikini Atoll next may and was wondering about taking my meg

Anybody taken one, know much about taking one?

Do they have cylinders or sorb out there or this not a good idea?

I know Mad dog expiditions runs ccr trips where they preposition sorb out there. Otherwise, probably not a good idea. The Bikini web site gives some guidance on this as well.

Couple guys from Auckland went up there about 6 months ago. Said it was hard to get to and very sparse in terms of facilities and gear. They are Rebreather guys but went OC at Bikini. Took their backplates, wings, reg sets and the dive guides supplied twins. Flights were once weekly from Guam. From memory, they flew Auckland-Cairns-Guam-Marshall Islands. The weather caused a delay leaving Marshall Islands to go back to Guam and they were stuck there for an extra week!

They mentioned you need to be right up to date with certification if you expect to do penetrations etc as there are no dive medicine facilities. As a result, the guides allow very little wiggle room in terms of the punters capabilities.

Don't be put off though. The photos and story they brought back were awesome. The wrecks are pristine!

Maybe try contacting the Bikini dive guides about taking your breather.

Go on, Take your meg. I dived my CK there last year & back in 05
they have plenty of sorb in storage, half a shed full-- mainly leftover from the past visitors who over estimated usage--- including me. Polished mine off this time though. If your shipping stuff over allow at least 3 months to get it there.
Hired a couple of 3 litre tanks from Mad dog (Rebreather World member)that he has left on the atoll instead of the using Bikini's (smallest ) steel 7 litre cylinders.
Best pack light & save getting slugged with excess baggage fees. Everything is weighed, including you on the last flight in ---

the airline (ha) that serviced bikini has shut down . i believe i read that thew dive operation there would cease doing biz-being that no one can get there

They weigh you but only to figure out the planes performance. They do weigh the luggage and charge for excess weight there. When I was there in 06 they did'nt weigh carry on seperatly but there was definately little space on the plane for the carry on to be stowed.

Can anyone verify this? I have a student who is scheduled to go there later this year.
