| Re: CCR in Bikini Atoll? Ok, so far it looks like i ll be lucky to get to Bikini, let alone my rebreather!! I was there when they were going through the worst of the transport problems. We got stuck on Bikini for 3 days, not a big hardship. The people who were supposed to be flying in had it much worse. As a result of the bad publicity I have heard that Air Marshall Islands have had some cash pumped in to stop it happening again. Through poor management they had lost a couple of pilots, and they had an issue with the smaller Dornier plane they use, which had to have an engine sent back to Germany for checks. Because they lost the 2 pilots, the remaining 2 who were qualified on the larger plane went over their allowed flying hours. We got stuck partly because of that and also because of a minor malfunction during a storm. It should be reasonably sorted by now. However, it is always going to be a gamble. The air transport is the weak link in the whole operation. Make sure there is nothing important you need to get home for soon after your trip. I'd also recommend email the dive operation (Jim Akroyd is the manager) to find out the latest. Don't bother taking your rebreather. Honestly. I really believe you'll enjoy yourself more on OC. They have the whole thing set up so well, including doubles and surface-supplied deco gas, that you will gain nothing in terms of the diving with a CCR. Andy Bikini pictures |

| Re: CCR in Bikini Atoll? Great pix Andy, your USS Saratoga internal shots are as crisp and bright as those shown by the two guys at our club nite a few weeks back. That place has just got to be on every divers "to do" list!

That place has just got to be on every divers "to do" list! Thanks. The subject material is so exceptional, it's difficult to take a bad picture, which is great for those of us lesser photographers.I agree absolutely. It is one place you should dive at least once. The Saratoga alone is worth going for. It is a unique wreck. And she is gradually falling apart after 60 years, so don't leave it too long. Andy |
