Question San Antonio, TX

I just got word that I am going to have to spend about 4 months of time in San Antonio, TX. from May to the end of Aug. I will have just finished training by then and had planned on putting many hours on my unit up here in the North East.

I am now going to be in an area that I am unfamiliar with. Does anyone have any suggestions of a group/shop/charter or favorite dive sites where I can put in some time on a Evolution. I will also be in need of a local shop that supplies Sorb.

Does anyone know how far a drive it is from San Antonio to the Gulf?

Thanks in advance for any helpful contacts.

You'll be in a good position to head to South Padre Island (near Brownsville, TX) where the Texas Clipper was recently sunk. There'll be lots of things to investigate on that wreck since it's huge. I know the guy that runs Deep Six (six pack boat) and is a good guy (well, most of the time... Just kidding John! ).

I'm sure I'll be there at least a couple times this season. I'll give you a shout when we're heading down.

Added: Oh, and if you want some place to just piddle around and get in the groove on the Rebreather, Mammoth Lake, in Freeport, will be opening up on March 1. Hydrosports Scuba will be the dive shop on site and controlling access. The lake is pretty much a diving theme park; lots to see and huge.

Well, I'll be in SA a couple of times over the next six months or so checking on the house we're building down there. Then, come around September will be there permanently (or at least a couple of years).

I've been told by some locals that there's supposed to be a flooded village in Medina Lake. Not sure of the accuracy of the statement but it is man made so there's a possibility. I'll either be bringing my boat or buying one there so I should have ample opportunity to search it out.

Re: San Antonio, TX

Thanks for the responses so far. I look forward to perhaps diving with some fellow silent divers when I get down there.

Does anyone have any experience with some good shore dives on the coast?

Secondly, does anyone have any experience with Oceanic Ventures, Inc.?

Regards,

TM

If in San Antonio hook up with jstovall on this board. Good/safe guy along with his buddy George. Oceanic Ventures is a few hours away in Houston and can provide you with anything you may possibly need.

Has been done. Late Summer incoming tide with wind out of the South. Decent vis on Southern end of state around Corpus and So. Padre. Many jewfish down by the Rio Grande/Boca Chica Beach around the Port Isabell Jetty's. Clear water does come right up to shore with the right conditions.

I didn't say it hasn't been done. You know I've dove Offat's Bayou which is diving by braille. But, repeatable shore diving that people are eager and happy to do any day of the week is non-existent. I don't wanna grow old waiting for the right conditions. Too much else to see and do.

There were no qualifiers in the OP's question. If you are in the area and it's good then go for it. I've dove Awful Bayou too with maybe 5' vis and saw lots of pretty fishes. I spent almost 2 weeks in So. Padre in September a few years ago and the conditions were good any day of the week. Clear water right up to the beach. Unlike Galveston and Offat's Bayou.
