See HERE.![]() The restrictions on the use of U.S. passports for travel to, in, or through Libya were lifted in February 2004. |

| Re: Diving Libya? any body even thought about Wrecks in Libya? Monkey What an interesting idea! I heard that they might have Mediterranean monk seals (the rarest marine mammal on Earth) in Libya, but no research in recent times has taken place there. Having dived as an American in the very anti-American country of Sudan, I think there is probably more risk in having equipment stolen than being strung up figuratively or literally. But then again, remember the Bulgarian health care workers. Maybe they would think our rebreathers are modern HIV-infection weapons sent in with the Imperialists.![]()

There was a dive club in Tripoli and one in Benghazi in 2001. Friends where scuba diving and spearfishing and they told me that there was huge amount of fish.any body even thought about Wrecks in Libya? But i don't think procuring oxygen will be easy. Also importing (and exporting) a rebreather in Libya i think it could cause a lot of problems. You should find some local people with the right connections. In any case, as everything that is not organised, you will spend a lot of money. |

| Re: Diving Libya? Libya from what I've heard is supposed to be a fantastic dive experience with not only lots of fish but stunning wreck diving. With some much traffic beginning with the Greeks and probably Persians through to WWII really exploration kinda stuff. Rumours of secret Nazi U-boot pens and treasure abound in the region sounds to good to be true. Realistically there are a few things to consider IMHO. Positive is that nthe Col. himself is a keen diver, the Libyans are very keen on getting tourist in and have been building on that for the last few years. At the moment it is consentrated on desert tours and coastal sites of cultural intrest. A colleague of mine did some desert scrambling there a few years back and said it was superb and really friendly hospitabile people. Bumped into a bunch of Rommels Ex-Afrika Korp. in Bengazi who where just seeing how things developted since 1943. Negatives. Well it is Libya so lots of advanced planning is required but thats not the problem seeing Libya are trying to warm up relations with the West. I know that the French and the Germans do not have major problems getting there how that is for a US citizen well I couldn't tell you. CCR's must be approved by the state in writing well in advance and getting supplies will be difficult. O2 available in Tripoli but no booster and its quaility is questionable! Absorbent forget it you'll either have to carry it in with advanced notice or maybe ship it in from Egypt via Marsa Matruh again with advance notice with the ministry. I think there are alot of hurdles and paperwork as well as expense involved but keep us all posted and good luck. It really is an intresting prospect ![]() |

I had around a map of discovered (through SideScan) wrecks made by a group o divers some years ago. If I can I scan it and public on the forum. Nad
