| Re: Koh Tao Koh Tao is only a short boat ride from Koh Samui, and I chose to stay on Koh Samui, where the hotels are better, and commute to Koh Samui. Andy Fritz, the designer of the Pelagian MCCR, operates out of Koh Samui. He's a very nice chap, with a wealth of experience modifying Russian rebreathers and then designing his own from the ground up. What's more, he has taken the thing to 120m in Thai caves. Contact him through rebreatherlab.com or koh samui diving Frankly, I'm not much of a fan of either Koh Samui or Koh Tao for the diving. The nicest hotel on Koh Samui was Napasai, though that's towards the top end of the price spectrum. There is a traditional hotel next door to Big Blue that is worth at least checking out, and Andy can get you a deal on the price. |

Unless you are diving off a tech oriented boat and I understand there is now one in Koh Toa you are unlikely to be able to do any profiles not accessable by the single tank OC divers 100ft max 60 min max seems to be the typical dive there. I plan on heading back next year though so let us know how it goes. Are there any recommendations in particular? Good / bad places to saty, dive with etc? Cheers Dave I would head to the west coast or contact ANDIBK on this board. I believe he is in Pattaya and does some interesting deep wrecks.

| Re: Koh Tao hi guys, I live and dive in Thailand. I m a meg owner and Koh Tao is definitely the easiest and best place to dive Rebreather. Around Pattaya on the West coast there s no deep wreck to dive, or at least nobody who knows them to take your there. There is an 85 metres dive site in heavy current and not much to see though, and two dive centres who can provide you tanks and O2 but at an awful price. For recreational diving Koh Tao is quite ok, especially two sites. Typically they do 2 dives morning 2 dives evening as sites are very close from the island. And diving is REAL CHEAP there. However if that's what you want to do, WebdiveBC post is totally correct. IF you decide to head there with a CCR i confirm you what mike wrote, the ONLY dive centre to be able to provide you what you need for your rebreather and who s used to CCRs is Master diver (recreational diving) and the Trident (technical diving), Tech Thailand. Different companies but located at the same place. They have REALLY good virgin wrecks (WWII) in between 60 and 85 metres depending on the trip. You can check their schedule at Tech Thailand » Trip Schedule The trident guys are the only ones to be technical diving DEDICATED in thailand (whatever all websites including mine are saying), meaning they dont do any recreational diving, all they do is teach tech, look for virgin wrecks and dive them. If you want to go on a trip its worth contacting their team through their website, be careful if they are on a trip you may obviously have to wait for a couple of days to get an answer Phuket also have a few deep wrecks worth diving but from what i've seen, far from the quality of what the trident has to offer. If you want to know more about phuket the centre you want to dive with is Ocean Zone Divers. Andrew is very experimented and knows his stuffs properly. They also have all you migth need for your Rebreather in stock. Done a couple of trips with them, never got disappointed. Hope this helps Laurent |

| Re: Koh Tao Shit diving, but if you're looking for ****ty backpackers and another kind of diving you're heading to the right place Absolutely. No point diving in Koh Tao when there are other "activities" so readily available. I spent almost a month there and managed 5 sea dives Just pack a dental dam![]() Dragon Bar and Whitening in Mae Haad were particular favourites...Unless you are going on the tech boat then I wouldn't bother taking a rebreather as none of the other operators are particularly interested in anything other than novices or divemaster students/slave labour and the diving (to me) is a bit dull. If you fancy something different then do the 5-day freediving course with Monica Ganame on the island. Cheers, Stuart

I spent almost a month there and managed 5 sea dives exactly! only the Trident would be any good for CCR diving, you'd be very disappointed with the local wrecks and the reef diving. Stuart, did we meet?Whitening is right in front of the Trident mooring. Jamie MV Trident PS name of Monica's school is Apnea Total, but you'll have to have a clear head to do their dives! |

| Re: Koh Tao Stuart, did we meet?Whitening is right in front of the Trident mooring. Entirely possible, I was there early 2005. Can't remember the exact dates but I left to go to Hong Kong for Chinese New Year. The course with Monica was great because it required a week of sobriety to prepare me for returning to the (relative) civilisation of HK.

| PROTEC MEXICO ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Koh Tao yo I used to live on Koh Tao a long time ago. The viz is depending on season, if raining a lot it can be a bit silty. The ocean floor around the island is relativly shallow with very few dive sites below 130 feet - 40 meters. So any diving will be limited by that. On some of the pinnacles you have a bit of current but usually very little. The best diving arund the island is actually on these pinnacles such as SOuth West Pinnacle or CHumpon Pinnacle. Sail ROck is inbetween Koh Tao and Koh Pagan and worth a trip. Aroudn Shart Island or White Rock is some good diving as well. greetings Matt |
