| Hawaii Best Time, Island, Operator Hello, I want to take a dive trip to the Hawaii islands and am looking for recommendations: 1) What is the best time of year? For diving? For fewer people? 2) What island and what operators would people recommend for an Rebreather diver with an OC buddy. 3) The wife doesn't dive so also need good shore-based acitivites (mountains, touristy stuff, shopping)? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. --p |

| Re: Hawaii Best Time, Island, Operator I can only speak for Maui, but two shops on the Kihei side are Rebreather shops - shore diving is great if you want to keep your $$ down. I dive year round but Dec-Feb we have all the whales here so you can hear them singing (on a RB of course, a little harder on OC) - boat dives are mostly geared for tourist so in out - move to the 2nd tank dive - do lunch. But of couse summers - the water is warmer and you can dive the north shore. Maui Dreams (Don or Aaron) or B&B (Brad) can hook you up with fills and gear for your wife. If you are going to do the dive boats that operate in and around Maui you won't get much bottom time on the Rebreather. B&B has a boat, Maui Divers does a nice OC tourist boat, and others that I don't know as well should also be fine.

| Re: Hawaii Best Time, Island, Operator You can find decent diving on all of the islands. Oahu is mostly boat diving (except during the summer when you can dive the north shore), Maui and the Big Island both have good shore dives year round. Once you nail down which island you plan on going to, you can figure out how to get sorb and O2. I've got everything here on Oahu if you need help. Aloha, Charlie

| Re: Hawaii Best Time, Island, Operator Most consistently good diving weather in Hawaii (exception being the north shores) is usually in the fall. Between the start of the school year and Christmas holidays, there are less tourists and air fare can be cheaper.

My favorite time of the year is September/October, *after* Labor Day...The hordes of "60 FSW for 55 minutes in pink fins" divers are gone until Thanksgiving, the water is warm(ish), and usually flat on the lee sides. As for which island, well, I'm biased ![]()

| you can dive here year round...tourist season on oahu is always peak...but mostly winter, best shore dives are on the north shore...but your talking late april till oct/nov, do your home work cause some operators cater to the japanese crowd, so you could get bumped 3 or 4 times..or 30 ft for 30 min...I highly recommend you do the ni'ihau dive..it'll be a memorible one of the islands...unless you can weasle out to midway laytah steve |

| Re: Hawaii Best Time, Island, Operator Indeed! My favorite time of the year is September/October, *after* Labor Day... Yes, if I had a job on the Big Island to support the lifestyle to which I have become accustomed (including diving a CCR), I would not tire of the perfect conditions to be found near year round on the Big Island. When we were over there in February, my girlfriend and I were getting a kick out of all the apologies by the captain and crew for the "terrible" conditions. We hadn't had that fine of conditions for weeks on Kauai! The hordes of "60 FSW for 55 minutes in pink fins" divers are gone until Thanksgiving, the water is warm(ish), and usually flat on the lee sides.
