Nice article, Ron, but what is the need since a proper mod-1 course should cover all of those scenario and more ?

Between the on-going 100m-thread and the question from your friend (which prompted the article), I am starting to realize if the general quality of training is really that awful.

Thanks Phi, I too wonder if some folks havent had all they really need in training land, however it also could just be that with so much information coming down the pipe, some things get forgotten. I have been reading the 100M thread wondering where some of our folks have received their training as well. Calculating gas needs was waaaay back in advanced nitrox.

Overall I think it's a useful article but it should be emphasised that different units have different capabilities. In the article a response to a failed O2 1st stage is to plug in offboard and fly the unit manually, on the Ouroboros the offboard gas will feed the solenoid so why fly manually?

Having recently completed the Mod 1 course it is useful to refer to an article like this so that I can confirm if indeed it was covered by the instructor in the course. Being new I do not know what I don't know if no one has ever been told what I don't know.

Also, its nice to use it as repetitive learning or a basis for ongoing practise of skills during dives. There is lots being learned and alot of task loading during the course. For me anyways going back after the course and rereading text, unit manual and doing skills practise helps my pea brain remember.

Fair enough.

However, that's the same reason why you also have the mod-1 course text book and/or additional Rebreather books. Your text book should cover everything Ron mentioned and more.

Anyway, I just thought it was redundant, but if others find it useful then Ron did the right thing. Learning is never a bad thing, we all do it every day...

Yup, and those of us that have been diving for a while can forget to take a spare mask

I must be a bit slow because I am constantly re-remembering things and re-learning things that I was told years ago. I wish I could remember all of it all of the time

Food for thought here folks. We often critisize people who ask questions about things that should be covered in MOD1 and then often the first reply is "Who was your instructor?". I can say that after my meg training I had to review quite a bit of it because there was a lot of material covered and I may have missed important bits without knowing it.
Although Ron's article covers a very fundamental bit of MOD1 teachings, I for one am glad to be able to review this material from a more experienced point of view and benefit from it.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, I find that I get to learn everytime I teach, or even write an article. I occasionally go back and read my own stuff and remember things I had forgot. (now isnt that silly?)

It would be neat to put together all the little tips and trick that all of our instructors have in their toolkits and combine them for others to absorb and use.

That would be great. I know how task loading it is when learning new things but really it is best to have a reference so that one can absorb the correct procedure rather than what they think it is suppose to be, which may be totally wrong, resulting in those nasty bad habbits.
