So if you all are nice to me, I will make sure that she will drive the boat every day. And Steven, she is French... ![]()

OK, you've got me. Rebreathers are mass market now so it will atrract a lot of people who shouldn't be let near one in a right thinking world, though may be more than capable of earning a cert. As has happened in cave diving and trimix diving, the days of the divers involved being the right people for the right sport are past. It's all far more accessible than it was even five years ago. Hence the numpty:normal ratio must have shifted.

Quote: (Originally Posted by lizardland) ...the days of the divers involved being the right people for the right sport are past... I believe you summed it perfectly there!IMHO, technical diving is so mainstream now that the present "average" technical diver now doesn't possess the same knowledge and experience as those in the past. For example, most do not know how to rebuild a reg or how to partial-pressure blend, etc. whereas in the past, it is pretty much a "requirement" to be able to participate since technical diving shops were not available. But on the other hand, I am glad to see that it is becoming so mainstream that anywhere I go, I could find a tech-oriented organization to provide the service so I could dive as I like. At the end of the day, it could be that the overall percentage of ill-prepared divers is the same - except the mass is much bigger thus the actual number of problems is also larger. And that's why organization like GUE strives because (in principal) they attract people who are willing to go thru more rigorous training in hope to become better divers. For everyone who opposes formal training, they need to realize that not everyone could be as independent as them and will benefit from not having to re-invent the wheel while self-teach. Life is a balance in all aspects. There will always be someone who can blaze the right path on their own, and also someone who needs a little nudge toward the right direction. Again, just IMHO... ![]()
