| Dive porn pimp ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Hypoxia. So you think you can bail? Just watched Jeremy Clarksons "Speed" on telly. He did a high altitude simulation of hypoxia and was asked to carry out tasks. I did a search to post the video but couldnt find one, but did find some similar. What I find worthy of post, is the inability of the subjects to put their oxygen mask on and over confidence in theor ability. Pause for thought?..... | Re: Hypoxia. So you think you can bail? Nice video. Thanks for sharing it. I could not help thinking that some of the people giving him instruction might also be suffering from Hypoxia as a result of too many marbles in their mouths. ![]() John |

We think having a bail out, or even a BOV would help in the event of a problem, but he didn't even know there was a problem, and couldn't even respond to directions when told to replace his reg... More of a reason to keep your eye on the cell monitors.

And yet only 280 people have read this thread to date.More of a reason to keep your eye on the cell monitors. I think this should be essential watching, over confidence in the ability to bail in a hypoxic situation shouldnt be encouraged.

| Re: Hypoxia. So you think you can bail? For 20 years I was required to go to the altitude chamber every 3 years in order to, among other things, get reacquainted w/ my personal hypoxia symptoms. For those not familiar, they can change w/ most people over time. One of my most vivid memories is watching one guy in our group-who volunteered to be the Guinea pig- remove his O2 mask @ chamber equivalent of 35,000 ft altitude, maybe a ppO2 of 0.05 ~ 0.07. His instructions were to replace his mask as soon as he felt his symptoms. He got his mask about half way to his face and froze with eyes wide open. The lights were on but there was definitely nobody home. The chamber attendant had to replace his mask. Made me a true and complete believer in how quickly I could be disabled by hypoxia w/ little to no warning. ‘Nuff said.

One trip in the chamber, at the age of 18, nailed that lesson home to me (which was the point, of course :-). I assume that, like most things, with advancing years my performance under hypoxic conditions has reduced from the frighteningly low base I demonstrated then, so it's a failure that frightens me even more than hyperoxia or CO2 issues. The point is - hyperoxia might kill you, a CO2 breakthrough might kill you, hypoxia WILL kill you. Cheers,

| Re: Hypoxia. So you think you can bail? for those who have personal experience with this drill, what did you perceive? i wonder if those who are impaired know it or what? do they blank out or do they think they are saving themselves while just sitting there? the guy in the video keeps saying 4 of clubs, did he know he was picking up new cards? or was he just 'stuck'? |

| Re: Hypoxia. So you think you can bail? So,... the thing that strikes me about hypoxia is that you should - and I emphasize - should - have plenty of warning.... Assuming no massive loss of bouyancy control, It takes quite some time to breathe down from a operational setpoint of say 1.0 or 1.2 to a hypoxic level... this is one of those areas where I believe prevention is far more capable than reaction... I'm a relative n00b at this., so I'll have to defer to those of you w/ more hours under your belt... can you share the chains of events where you found yourself responding to the risk of hyperoxia, how close to the thresholds did you get before recognizing and rectifying the situation... |

| Re: Hypoxia. So you think you can bail? Unless you knowingly or unknowingly (failed to analyse a bad mix) have grossly hypoxic dil and perhaps an ADV mishap...IMHO BOV's are for hypercapia.
