Sentinel course completed.

Saturday through Monday of last week I had the great pleasure to be taken through the Sentinel course by Al Wright of CCRB in the good company of my old mucker, Rich Stevenson and Paul Lijnen (IANTD licensee for Belgium, Austria & Switzerland).

Training was conducted in the UK.

Firstly I didn't take any photos, sorry.

Anyway, I am really impressed with the build quality of the unit, its functionality and its swim profile.

Prior to the course commencing I had the pleasure of visiting the factory again and going through a complete strip and rebuild in the capable hands of Jason.

Wearing a CF200 crushed neoprene suit, DUI Fleece undersuit and Fourth element Arctic undies plus a Golem vest, I needed 6 kilos to dive the unit comfortably, knowing I need 3 kilos more in my CF means that, come summertime and my TLS, I will be down to 2-3 kilos, not a huge amount of weight.

The electronics are outstanding, the predive requirements are another level on from the Ouroboros and make absolute sense. The air calibration is well thought out and a cinch to conduct.

I really like the auto setpoint function, and that coming from a complete sceptic in auto setpoint switching, is saying something!

The unit allows you to predetermine a bottom PPO2 which is automatically reached through a dive to more than 21 metres (gradually) and a neat function that will allow you to select a different auto setpoint for deco, user adjustable to kick in at your deep stops or at shallower decostops selected by the diver. None of this detracts from the user's ability to overide and select manual setpoint at any time.

Overall I am really impressed and judging by the grins on the other guy's faces they were too.

I am looking forward to really putting it through its paces this summer, it won't replace the Ouroboros, it is not meant to do so, but it is certainly going to give a lot of other units a good run for their money.

So, now that Phil Sudan and I have completed our training, we are good to go.

Training is now available through ZGD to mixed gas level on the Sentinel, come to Switzerland and check out the scenery!

Cheers,

Dave Cooper.

Re: Sentinel course completed.

Thanks for that write-up Dave. It's good to finally start hearing about how well the Sentinel is doing.
When you say it is not as good as the 'Boris (which is wasn't designed to be, so no shock there) to what are you referring? What can the Boris do the Sentinel cannot?

Boris has much more stainless and is likely more robust in the long run (and has that sexy carbon fibre shell ).

Hi Marvin,

I am not saying it isn't as good as the Ouroboros at all, the Ouroboros still remains the Expedition Rebreather, stainless piping and other design features differentiate the Ouroborous from the Sentinel.

The actual back-mounted PPO2 reading is just one of those differences.

Both units are pressure tested down to 150 metres for componenet failure and the Doctors (Jerome and Mike ) have shown the Ouroboros can go way beyond that.

The Sentinel is a very, very, good unit, in my opinion and intuitive, at least to me.

Cheers,

Dave.

Re: Sentinel course completed.

Dave, how did the WOB compare to the Boris?

How did you find the difficulty level for routine maintenance items?

Did you notice any difference while diving due to the single counter-lung?

Hi Marvin,

Perceived WOB was outstanding, the over pressure dump valve works very well too and is user adjustable, very good.

Routine maintenance is not complicated at all.

No difference at all with the single lung, didn't even notice it, Rich did a deliberate flood-recovery exercise, removed the DSV deliberately, opened it let a good lot of water enter then went upright and flushed pretty much all of the water straight out, he checked the unit immediately upon surfacing and there was very little water in it.

So that's a good thing too, much like the flood recovery capability on the Megalodon, handy to know that it is possible.

Cheers,

Dave.
