rEvo Training Report at Dutch Springs PA

The first rEvo class in the NE US is now completed.. Its ran from 9/18 to 9/22

The group consisted of Dan Stocker, Kevin Ward and Al Marvelli as students, Paul Raymakers as the lead instructor, Joe radomski as assistant instructor and Dave Sutton as an instructor in training.

Day 1
The class began with a full day of academics in a rented conference room at local Holiday in Express near Dutch. The three "instructors" took turns presenting the academic material with the highlight being an extended session prepping all the new rEvos for diving the following day. The rEvos come complete with all the parts ready to dive (with the exception being tanks and valves in the USA)..

Day 2
the day began with final preparation of the rEvos then into the pool for the first 2 hours session. The divers got a chance to see what adjustments needed to be made to the rig, and Al had his first experience being bubbleless.. The pool was adequate for the initial orientation but lacked a good deep end to properly practice all of the necessary skills.. SO after a quick lunch it was off to the student area at Dutch Springs to conduct another 2 hours of confined training.. Dave, Kevin, Al and Paul stayed together as a group, I broke away with Dan to do his first OW dive on the rEvo since he was already a KISS instructor. This was more of a fun dive to get aquaninted with the unit than a heavily skills oriented dive..

Day 3
First Open water dives for the main group and buddy dives between Dan and Myself. The main group was handled more or less as buddy teams with Paul controlling the dives and skills. My dives with Dan were mostly concentrating on the different reactions necessary to deal with emergencies on the rEvo compared to the KISS. Diving at dutch this time of the year is very pleasant, the surface temp was 73f and just below the temp dropped to 67f and contnued down to 45ffw without an additional thermocline.. I had Dan leading a tour of the various attractions around dutch and found I was getting quite hot and had to drop below 45ffw to cool off ( water temp dropped to ~55f).

DAY 4
We now dove as a single group, I paired with AL, Paul paired with Kevin, and we had Dave leading the skills.. Both myself and Paul acted as students and followed Daves instructions (or NOT!). Dave handled the "student" screw ups that Paul and myself threw at him well... Dave even pulled out a knife threathening to cut my hose if I did a certyain action again The dives all went well and Al was really taking to a rebreather... The general CCR exam was administered to Dave, Al and Kevin..

DAY 5
AL and Kevin planned and executed the dives as a buddy team wth Dave acting as the surpervising instructor by following closely behind, and Paul and myself following on the edges of the other divers vision.. The first dive was mostly a fun dive checking out the pump station and other attractions. The second dive began with a descent along the elevator shaft, then a swim to the platform to practice some emergency skills.. Next we progressed to the pump station followed by a "combat" swim led by al.. Even though the water was cold (average depth was around 75ffw) the swimming kept you nice and warm with the exception of your hands..
Finally a debrief then the rEvo specific final exam for Dave, Al and Kevin..

Congratulations to All on a great class..

Dave Sutton will be teaching classes shortly and I will be instructing in areas that Dave will not be covering after I log a bit more hours on the rig..

Re: rEvo Training Report at Dutch Springs PA

Thanks Joe!

From my end, coming in from "Out of the Cold" and into the ANDI Family, I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the ANDI training philosophy and course content. It's definately a step-up from other agencies that I have worked with over the years, and it's a pleasure to be associated with them.

Joe's Instructor-Crossover course for me could not have been more professional. Well done! Thanks for being the "simulated class screw-up"... but we both survived anyhow. Having Paul there to show some of the fine design details was great.

EXPLORER will soon be the only Liveaboard Dive Boat/ANDI Training Facility on the East Coast. We're submitting our air station for scrutiny under the ANDI "Safe Air" program, and look forward to a long relationship with ANDI. They do things correctly, or not at all.

Best,

Dave
