Two new vision inspiration divers qualify with Martin Robson at Stoney Cove

I’d like to proudly announce that John and Julian have recently completed their IANTD CCR mod 1 course at Stoney Cove on brand spanking new Visions, with instructor, Martin Robson.

We were eased in over the weekend with plenty of theory and a two hour pool session before trucking off to Stoney Cove to endure hour upon hour of intensive training over four days.

Martin’s blend of friendly enthusiasm together with military-style discipline ensured that the right habits were instilled from the word go. Finding the right balance between intervention and allowing you to take responsibility, his training breeds confidence from the ground up.

Eight open water dives saw us comfortable on low and high PO2 drills, maintenance of minimum loop volume and scr manual operation. All drills were done on the fly so that we didn’t get too cold in the 6 degree water.

The solenoid drills took place between the Coach and the Stanegarth. From the top of the Stanegarth we’d swim off to the helicopter before deploying our dsmbs and ascending to the 6 metre plateau. Only then did the exercise finish!

7l bailout cylinders were added on the third day and in seemingly no time at all, it was time to visit the hydro box for our deepest dive of the course. Bail out removal and replacement took place while hovering over the hydro box, and was followed by a gradual ascent to 20 metres after which time, who knows what could “happen”.

Many thanks to Martin for his scrupulous attention to detail, his professionalism and genuine enthusiasm for the Vision Inspiration. And finally, tribute should be paid to Julian who endured the whole week with less than adequate thermal protection due to having left his weazel behind! I know that those fourth element things are good but they aren’t that good. brrr

And I think we are in danger of straying substantially off thread here

But I will be bringing all sorts of goodies to Ireland including Green and Blacks hot chocolate.

Stoney Cove at 7C required hot chocolate and chips for all surface intervals.

Julian thought it was June not March and came under equipped on the thermal front so I lent him my Typhoon heated waistbelt and John needed to borrow a pair of gloves as he couldn't operate his Vision handset wearing his mittens.

It was a good thing I was there really
