| Dive Computer Enhancements I have been studying how dive computers could better ensure that divers do all of their checks. The following is a quotation from “Proceedings of Dive Computer Workshop”, The American Academy of Underwater Sciences, September 26 to 28 1988. “A number of suggestions were made about how to handle the violating diver. There seemed to be agreement that the diver in this situation cannot go unpunished. It was even suggested that the dive computer should shock the diver when he violates, or that it should ‘break’ or go into a lockup mode that requires a $100 repair to get it going again.” Microsoft shows in this video that they understand the process: http://a3.v14853d.c14853.g.vm.akamaistream.net/5/3/14853/v003/1a1a1a72db3eb01f920167db4fb41745a9188ffd69d8399dcb 2c97f865c62f5dc02f9ccbfc30689dd0ff6cdf44bc2c5bc83b a01888b7fc356ea7e0/9999_w.asf Should we be doing this with divers who don't calibrate before every dive?

| Re: Dive Computer Enhancements Man, I'm glad I got the first version on the Meg with Shearwater.... LOL I don't want no babysitter... If I wanted someone tellin me what to do. I'd bring my mom with me... I like having alarms. I don't want things shutting down if I decide to ignore it. Just keep running and telling me info to get me safe. That's all I ask. If I get stuck in a wreck. And I overstay. I want the thing to tell me my safe way out. Even, if I can't do it. And, DON'T lock up on the surface. Because then someone else reading it. Can't get the info if it locks up. So, they'd have to find out the computer. Call them to ask for an unlock code. If it's even built in. Which would take time. Info should be INSTANTLY accessible. If a diver chooses to kill himself. It's his choice. Try making them bullet proof and if something goes wrong with the unit. Wouldn't the manufacturer be MORE at fault? If they designed in everything to keep you from being an idiot? And you die. Well, he shouldn't of. The manufacturer said it couldn't happen. My car doesn't have a limiter. I can drive it up to 150mph with bald tires showing the cords if I want. And if a tire blows and I drive into someone. It's my own fault. Why would I want electronic controls that limited it to the speed limit? And that my tires should be changed ever xxx miles? As my oil would have to too. At least with a Rebreather. YOU are the one paying for it. Not someone else you run into. Well, You're family is the one paying for it. You have to let people have a little control of there own choices. Otherwise, I wouldnt' buy any of this stuff. LOL I hope you were joking.... LOL.... I hate the computers that lock up now. |

Now why would I even want to calibrate before every dive?I calibrate in the morning only and dive three times in the day. By your reasoning I would get locked out of the computer? No thanks! ![]()

| Re: Dive Computer Enhancements I disagree on locking people out. I do agree on refusing to operate automation if the system is not reasonably certain of its own status. Display the alarm and what you have, and if the diver chooses to ignore and fly manually (using the "computer in his head") that's his call. The VR3 doesn't lock out if I violate it. It will continue to make a "best guess" and warns me that it is a guess, because it is no longer reasonably confident of its operating parameters. |

| Re: Dive Computer Enhancements The really funny thing is that the quotation isn't a joke. It really does appear on page 56 of the "Proceedings of the Dive Computer Workshop." The rest of it, however, was a joke. Please refer to the following for my real views: http://www.rebreatherworld.com/rebre...idents-10.html (Didn't anyone -other than eman- think the video was a little bit funny?)

So when a rebreather diver gets locked out. The designer gets to share in the customers pain. I was thinking something along the lines of a strategicly placed alligator clip and an outletThe rest of it, however, was a joke. | Re: Dive Computer Enhancements Bruce, Maybe another angle on this is that when a diver gets an undeserved hit, the software theorists and developers as well as hardware developers and manufacturers can have their nuts squeezed in an electronic vise....simulating the discomfort the diver would be feeling. Ryan And yes...the video was really funny. I need to send it to the guys in my IT department. |
