VR3 went nuts

we were on the boat ride to my first trimix dive and i was setting it up for 10/60 and air diluent which was accepted fine.

i put the unit aside and went to check if it had turned off after a few minutes only to find it had commenced diving.......

at first i thought it went into some kind of demo or plan mode and gave it to my instructor to have a look at it. after a couple of minutes he just shook his head and said it's gone bananas.......very reassuring when you are just about to go for your first big dive.

i took the unit with me during thee dive to see what it's up to. at around 60m it was showing me 300+m and a deco time of about a week

we are now sending the unit in to be reprogrammed....however, i somehow lost faith in the unit.

shearwater my solution ??

I hope you have done the one week deco in a chamber or in very warm water...

I use my Shearwater GF for one year now w/o any Problems. Never leave me alone.....

Re: VR3 went nuts

Yes it seems VR is having a batch of problems with the pressure transducers in the new HD models. I have had to send back 5 computers so far for customers. One customer had to send two computers back because no one at VR decided to test the "new replacement" before sending it out.

We have now secured a Shearwater water acct in hopes that they have better customer service.

Re: VR3 went nuts

I have a lot of friends hat love their VRs, but I'm quite happy with my Shearwater, thank you very much.

So, uh- 10/60 for your first Trimix dive......with Air dilluent? I don't understand- isn't the 10/60 your dilluent, to be used with 02? And that seems like a funny mix for your first trimix dive....... I had to take Mod 3 before I could use hypoxic blends......

Re: VR3 went nuts

There were a batch of VR3’s made around May 2007 which have problems with the pressure transducer. I was driving in my car when we noticed my wife’s VR3 had started a dive, it’s a known problem.

our travel and bottom gas was 10/60 in an external stage tank hooked up to the manual diluent inlet. we switched to air upon ascent at 45m and finished our deco and dive on air as diluent.

That makes sense, but.......why would you do it like that? I'd do the whole dive with the 10/60 + 02, and just use the dil to lean down my loop as I went deeper, and use the 02 to keep it rich as I ascended.
