Re: HH Delrin Handset Issues

My experiance with the metal handsets was that they simply required regular maintenance to be reliable.

The delrin handsets are a bit more forgiving

OK, sorry 'bout that, hijack over.

I am glad that you got the battery issue sorted out. I have had the delrin handsets from the beginning and cannot relate to the issues with the older handsets. I have just started to use Duracells in mine (3 dives with duracells in the secondary). I have always used the Saft batteries, until I ran out of them. I am still a little nervous about using alkalines in the primary handset though. I guess that it is time to give that a try too.

I was anal about cleaning and maintaining my contacts. I'd have to disagree with you on HH and reliable being used in the same sentence at least for aluminum versions.

I'm diving with a metal handset (latest version) since the beginning of the year (february) and I have never ever had any contact issue on it.
I bought it second hand from a guy that used it as a deco computer (no solenoid control).
I'm still in the learning curve for the battery as I don't know precisely how many hours I can use it on my hybrid system (mCCR with a solenoid). I never take the battery out between dives and never used Deoxit to clean the contacts (although I bought for the future).
The only issue I had was the wet-contact, some grease around the screw solved it.
One friend has the same setup on his rEvo and doesn't seem to have problems neither.
Oh yes, I am exclusively using Saft LS14500 batteries.

I'd like to go to the delrin handset, if it was not so expansive ...

I use Duracell Alkalines and change them every day of diving or after a few dives, which ever comes first. I usually assemble my rebreather the night before and perform all my post-assembly checks and calibrate my handsets with the old battery, before I put the new battery in. Then, I always put my handsets to sleep each time I'm done with the assembly process and until I'm actually on the boat and ready to commence my pre-dive checklist.

I set my battery alarm to 1.2, which is the lowest it will allow.

I dive practically every weekend, and so far, I've been having very good luck with that approach!

Re: HH Delrin Handset Issues

I use AA Energizer Titanium batteries from Sams Club. As Adrian does, I use old batteries for calibration the night before. Since the units use some power, even when off, I don't put the batteries in until the morning of the dive.

Never had any issues doing two dives in cold water, and in FL three dives in a day on occasion.

It's not only the contacts that need cleaning in some of the older handsets.

I had a few issues myself with them. I was told to wire-brush the inside threading on occasion to remove any Oxide build up, which may not be visible to the eye, and to stretch the springs out a bit. And on occasion use a pencil eraser on the contacts, as well as using a contact cleaner & the black contact grease on a regular basis.

Once I followed those procedures, I never had a problem.
