Inspiration Classic Handsets - Internals?

Hello all,

Recently picked up an older inspiration classic. I haven't seen the displays with the backlights on yet, but notice they seem a bit tough to read in normal light. Older LCD technology.

I can't help but wonder. Internally, are all the electronics put into an epoxy block or anything?

I can't help but think it would be killer to switch the displays over to LED based displays. Doing this might hurt readability in sunlight though, not 100% sure.

Many of the LCDs on microcontrollers were driven with Hitachi driver chips, and I think there are LED display replacements.

Yes, the current draw would have to be checked, to make sure the LED displays don't draw more power. It's likely though that they draw less power.

Thoughts?

They should be quite easy to read in normal light. You might want to check the menu and see what the brightness setting is. Normal is 30. lower number is more contrast and can go up to 99. you might also want to confirm at indeed they are backlit and its working as I am not sure how you could see the display and not the backlite.

I think someone's replaced the screen with OLED in the past, unless it was a windup.

The electronics are potted in a solid tranparent rubbery compound. You would find it tough getting that off, unless there is a solvent available.
