NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

All,

I've created a new decompression program which is avilable for user testing. One of the main reasons why I built the app was that I didn't really like the functionality provided by existing software. That is, I don't really feel that existing deco software takes advantage of computer automation. This is specifically the case when it comes to producing tables for primary and bailout profiles.

The applicatication (called OneStop Deco) is built on Microsoft .Net/WPF technology, and unfortunately only runs on Windows platforms at the moment. I'm hoping to have furture releases built on Silverlight, which will be able to run on Mac and Linux.

Features Include:
  • Metric & Imperial (imperial needs more testing)
  • CCR or OC profiles
  • Generates printable tables in 4x6" photo card size prints
  • Different GF's for primary and bailout profiles
  • Graphical profile view
  • Excel export function
  • New look, easy to user interface
  • Model: Bulhmann + GF
  • License: Freeware (GPL)
The current development builds can be installed from the browser. This will install pre-requisities (.net 3.5 & ms reporting) and auto update the app on future releases. It doesn't support installation through a proxy so, but I'll have offline install available soon.

The url is - OneStop Deco

Basic Instructions (screen shot attached):
  • Check settings
  • Enter gases
  • Enter waypoints
    • Setpoint = 0 means open circuit
    • Time = 0 for gas switch
    • If open circuit, select auto-pick gases and the program will choose the open ciruit gases for deco
  • Click Calculate
Please let me know what you think of if you've any ideas for improvement.

Credit should be also given to Guy Wittig, who MV-Plan on which much of the algorithms are based.

It's downloading now - the screenshot look's nice! I'll give you some feedback as soon as I can get over this 'flu and can dive. . Until then, I'll play.

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

I haven't downloaded it, I'm just going by the screenshot so if I'm wrong then apologies.

The big criticism I've had of most software for a long time is that it doesn't make cave diving profiles easy. They all assume a straight descent at a constant rate. Not many allow you to, for example, enter a start depth, an end depth and specify how long it is going to take you to do that. Most rely on a preset descent rate that gets used for all depth changes which is really restrictive on cave planning.

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

Only a single ascent/descent is currenlty supported. I do caves so this isn't a requirement I have. Friends that I dive with do, so I'll ask them too.

It can handle whacky profiles, but only at a constant set rate.

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

Hi,
Love the look of the user interface and it operates nicely too.

I've got some small issues though already:-

1) It would be nice to be able to insert a line in the dive plan. At the moment I have only been able to add a line at the bottom, which is fine, but then I can't move it into the correct position in the dive sequence.

2) With eCCR in mind, it would be nice to be able to do a SP switch on the descent. You would need to be able to specify at what depth and what your high and low setpoints were.Keep up the good work.

Regards
Stewart

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

thanks for the input.

1) Good point. I'll working on a move up/down and insert function.

2) This is possible now by adding an initial waypoint with depth & time = 0. Enter your starting setpoint. for changes, just enter the depth, time = 0 and new setpoint.

I think this would be a nice option to be automatically, with settings for starting setpoint and switch depth. the target setpoint would be defined by the next waypoint.

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

Hi Damien,

Good work, it is nice to see a smart looking interface! Down to the nuts and bolts, this may be configuration or my lack of understanding, however based on the attached screen shot there are a couple of questions:

What is the -6 ceiling on the 50%?

Why when I have two gases active does it not switch to the 50% at the MOD of 22m for the bailout plan, and still list CCR until 6m on the bailout profile?

Cheers,

Ben.

p.s. I work as a .net codemonkey/sql server DBA to pay for my hobbies, so let me know if I can be of assistance.

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

the ceiling values in the gas list are calculated to be the point at which the gas returns a PPO2 of 0.21 (this is currenlty not user configurable).

-6m there is the point at which EAN50 hits 0.21. It would be pretty straight forward to override with zero, but I've see this in other apps.

The second point about auto gas selection and bailout is probably related to a usability or label issue, more than a technical bug. It might also be the logic used to define the bailout profile (opinions welcome)

My expected usage was that you plan a CCR profile (so no need to tick auto-pick), and then the bailout is calculated for you. The bailout profile is basically the primary profile with the auto-pick option ticked.

Given the profile you entered (with setpoint switch at 6m), the bailout profile is not valid in this scenario. I believe the logic for the bailout in this scenario would be to remove the trailing setpoint changes from the profile first, then calc ascent.

The auto-pick option should only be used when you want the program to pick gases for an open circuit ascent. Typical scenarios are full OC dives or bailout.

I think "View Bailout" profile should be disabled if you tick the auto-pick option. In this scenario you're manually planning a ascent so auto option is redundant.

RE: help, definately welcome. PM Sent.

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

You could use Mono to run this .NET application on the Mac. They support Windows.Forms and such.

Re: NEW DECO SOFTWARE - Testers Wanted

From what I read Mono doesn't yet support WPF. I expect a viable silverlight runtime will be available for non-Windows platforms. Once that is available, should be a simple port from WPF --> Silverlight.
