Question Cable Glands for Dummies

I'm about to replace the Computer on my Sport KISS ( I could resist the pull of a Pursuit no longer ! ). I have a new cable gland from Jetsam, and was just wondering - is it as fool proof as it looks; anything I should take special care with / torque settings of the gland etc.

I'd hate to get a leak due to not fitting it correctly.

I presume the old one cannot be reused ?

Re: Cable Glands for Dummies

Using them is as easy as it looks!

Note:

DO NOT over torque them. Just past finger tight is all you need. Too tight and they will actually cut into the cable and cause a leak.

They *can* be reused.

Re: Cable Glands for Dummies

I've just removed the old gland, complete with the cable, as the 2 are completely joined by a potting compound inside the gland; it certainly looks waterproof

I would like to do this with my new cable gland, but have no idea of suitable potting compounds. The stuff in the old gland is black, and quite hard.

Anyone got any recommendations ?

They really don't need to be potted, which is why I said they were reusable. But, if you do want to pot them, any good RTV silicone sealant will work. Colors are clear, black, and white. All are the same. Make sure it's real RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) silicone sealant, not 'caulking'.

For safety's sake, make sure the sealant you use does NOT give off acetic acid when exposed to humidity/water. Almost all of them DO, and in some instances this can cause corrosion in any nearby electronics. Some give off acetic acid when setting and then don't give it off again - this is OK. The best just don't and they are hard to track down, but not unbelievably expensive.

Here endeth the lesson in sucking eggs.

Dead right, sorry to have not mentioned this before: Best bet is to buy what is used to make salt water aquariums. Zero post-cure issues, as the fishies are unbelievable sensitive.
