Shearwater GF Battery replacement

OK, so- I figured out from the website that I have to remove the faceplate on my GF to replace the battery. I did that. All I see is a wee little tiny battery in the upper right corner- is that what I replace? it seems sort of stuck there under a small metal bracket and doesn't want to come out. When I started to reach for a screwdriver to pry it out with, the alarm bells in my head went off, and, against all my instincts, I realized that I ought to break down and ask for advice.....(I must be getting older)

Re: Shearwater Battery replacement

When the need arises to replace the handset battery, the following instructions should be followed.
The ten screws should be removed carefully using a No.1 Pozidrive screwdriver. The outer four corners should be removed last.
Once the clear cover has been removed and the legend plate put to one side, the main display board is visible.
The two screws in the picture below at the top right and bottom left of the board should be removed. Be careful not to touch any components or the LCD display.
Ensure you are adequately grounded, by using an antistatic wristband or similar connected to an adequate earth. Do not directly touch any board components. Gently prise the highlighted connectors from the board. There are three in total, the far right being small.
Once the board has been lifted out of the way, the SAFT LS14500 3.6v battery can clearly be seen. Replacement of the battery is straight forward, however correct battery polarity must be strictly observed.

Re-assembly of the handset is the reverse of these instructions. Ensure all dirt and debris is excluded from the inside of the handset and the ’O’ ring is clean and very lightly lubricated.

Look carefully under the pictures and you will see a PDF document you can download and keep with comprehensive instructions.

If you are not happy to do this, we can carry out battery replacement for a small charge.

Re: Shearwater Battery replacement

IME- Change battery every 6months.

I inadvertantly got almost 18months out of one in the first rather slow year of diving, when it went, it went fast.

Re: Shearwater Battery replacement

Cool- mission accomplished- thanks again for the help! fwiw, I did a couple searches, and found nothing about this topic- now, this thread will pop up if someone searches for it.

I keep my backilight on constant- I dive in dark, murky water most of the time, and it's great just having it on when you're task-loaded. Maybe that's why it didn't last too long; but the replacement just cost me 14.99 @ Radio Shack. No complaints from me, even if I do end up changing it twice a year.

Re: Shearwater Battery replacement

My Shearwater doesnt look like the pics. I followed the directions, took the face off, the two screws out and gently lifted up the electronics expecting to see a battery. NO. No disconnects for the board either. Under the electronics is a black flat plastic continuation of the case with the wires (which are soldered to the electronics) dissappearing through the plastic into apparently the next dimension. Now what? This is a brand new SW with only 3 or 4 dives on it. The display went blank and I would guess the first way to troubleshoot it is to change the battery.

In this case i believe your computer is not a GF but a Pursuit.
The Pursuit's battery compartment is in the top part of the computer accessable thru a cover on the right side. You can open it with a coin.
