What would it take for an interested to buy?

Dear List,

Here is a question for those watching from the sidelines and others who wish to share their experience in getting into rebreathers:

What would it take to get you, the interested and non-owner, to buy a rebreather?

Is there an element lacking that upon arriving on the scene motivated the purchase, or is there still something missing?

The answer could be as simple as waiting for better survival statistics to waiting for a more natural breathing experience to some widget that practically dives for you and does the dishes.

For many, this transition has already taken place and it would be nice to find out what that is.

Thank you,

z

Re: What would it take for an interested to buy?

For me it was in the plans but the final straw was PEER PRESSURE. My 5 dive buddies all got rEvo's at the same time and left me standing there with double 130's and I started to feel like a PITA on our dives. Heavy noisy gear with very limited BT's, was not going to cut it with this group. I bought a CK a few months later.
There is one buddy left who is in CCR training now and looking to buy.

Re: What would it take for a prospect to buy?

Buck O Five,

Thank you for the reply, this is very good material. Would it be fair that there are distinct advantages over open circuit and there needs to be some human element? Perhaps it is the sense of acceptance of the technology or the overwhelming advantage still needs some tidbit?

Are you able to provide some insight into what motivated the CK over your buddies' choices? Did you like the simplicity of the sensor display information? Did you want to avoid the complexity and "magic" of the ECCR?

Thank you again for providing insight into your decision process!

I am going to go with the every present "Time and Money" When I get the Time to take two weeks off for training, I will spend the money! ;p

When that "Time" comes.. I am going to be one Happy Camper. Although.. None of my dive buddies dive rebreather, Hopefully I will start something.

Re: What would it take for an interested to buy?

For me it's just down to having the $$$...and getting the nod from the finance minister

I've already made my made up that I want one and have been doing a lot of research on different units, so I have a good idea of what I want in my own unit. Still not 100% settled on which unit I will get, but that's more just down to features and benefits.

If I were to come into a decent sum of $$$ in the very near future I would certainly have one.

<confession>
I suffer from sea sickness.
I was getting royally browned off with blending a 'mix, spending the time hanging over the side revisiting breakfast while the others dived and then discovering it was exactly wrong for what we were planning next week.
I either bought five spare twinsets or, heck, one of them new fangled rebreathery things.
This was 2001.

Re: What would it take for an interested to buy?

For me the expense is obviously an issue but I have another concern. I want to try these units before I buy. I wouldn't buy a car without driving it first (and some of my cars haven't cost as much as any of the commercial units) and I won't buy a rebreather without diving it.
I have met people from Inspiration, Megalodon, Prism and KISS at a local trade show in each of the past two years. Following the shows, I called each to try and set up an "experience" with these units. The only people to even bother calling me back was KISS and they set me up with a shop that I got a lecture, teardown and about an hour in the pool.
I dive a Dolphin and told them all I was looking to upgrade. It seems that if I wasn't ready to shell out the money for training right away, they weren't interested. I was quite disappointed.
I hope others have had better luck than I have. Has anyone else run into this?

Re: What would it take for an interested to buy?

Owning a rebreather is something you do. If you think about owning one based on money, you will never own one, they are not cheap.no matter what unit
you buy.If you can't take the time to make the time for your training no matter what rebreather you buy, you will not own one. However you try to
justify your decision about owning a unit, it comes down to this, you do it or
you don't. like my dear old Dad would say, "crap or get off the pot."

all the best.
