Lightbulb The perfect rebreather

Hi all

By nature, I am a critical engineer who can't help myself evaluating technical equipment, finding flaws, apricatte good design, wonder why they didn't make better design or I miss features on a good design that could be even better.

I don't know how the respectable Rebreather manufactures are inspired to their design, but I think it would be interesting to see what the crowd really wants.

So here goes, If I had a fleet of engineers that could design what i wanted, this is what my rebreather would contain/look like:
  • Modular design (like meg)
  • Radial scrubber
  • OWS counterlungs with connectors for off board gas
  • Custom size CL in nylon
  • Canister made of plastic composite material (low travel weight)
  • Compact BOV fitted
  • Machined parts (like meg)
  • Custom size Cooper hoses
  • Double o-rings on all seals
  • As compact as possible
  • MCCR with a parashute system
  • 3 O2 cells which are protected by a hydrophobic membrane and a solenoid
  • HUD
  • Vibrate alarm in HUD
  • Two identical handsets
  • Computers/handsets are upgradable by pc/mac interface by user
  • Handset colour screen displays the usual, as well as deco information and tank pressures. The tank pressures are shown in columns/digits for easy reading. Display setup can be changed by user.
Rechargeable batteries in handsets, can accommodate normal alkaline batteries as well.
Scrubber temp areas displayed on screen.
Remaining time on tank pressure, using pressure history during dive.
  • Black box in rebreather, saves data for 1 year
Logs all data from both handsets and time.
  • Underwater Rebreather beacon activates if data are passive (depth, tank pressure and if loop temperature drops to surrounding water temp)
This Rebreather will serve my diving needs (and more). I especially think that the black box would be a valuable asset to Rebreather divers. This way we can more easily find out what went wrong so we can prevent it from happening again, and we don't have to speculate to the moon on a thread when we loose a Rebreather friend.

Let's give the manufactures something to work with....

What would your perfect Rebreather look like?

Re: The perfect rebreather

My perfect CCR

Uses a totally different way of measuring PP02 which is more reliable / accurate than galvanic cells.

Co2 monitor that actually worked quick enough to be useful

Has an integrated BOV and a loop that is balanced to be neutral with the weight of the bov attached

Optional scrubber cartridge sizes for optimizing lime usage

Rear mounted lungs with water trap and drainage designed in

Tool free Assembly and disassembly

options for off board 02 and diluent addition

Dill flush capability

Heads up display showing Avg PP02 bottom time and TTS with red LED warning lights for issues outside tolerance.

Secondary wrist mounted display showing full range of critical functions on a large back lit color screen

Multiple decompression profiling options

OC bailout facility on wrist unit with option to set a more aggressive decompression profile in the water if bailing out

Integrated pressure monitor for 02 and diluent to warn below 20bar

Wireless upgrade and down load facility

Unit should have a split multi section back plate for ease of packing

Ultra light materials used throughout its design

Meg like design to enable the use of any available tanks

Adjustable stand to suit varying heights of diver

Must fit in bag suitable for carry on to aircraft.

No depth problem
I can directly see what's on the Bottom
No deco
I can install a café machine
...

Cheers

Re: The perfect rebreather

Another angle:

- Simple
- Reliable
- Streamlined when worn
- Good WOB
- Core Rebreather packable in airline carry on baggage, inclusive of weight limits.
- All breathing loop couplings uncrossthreadable screw thread
- BMCL
- Standard leaky valve, individual PPo2 o2 display and independent HUD with plug in setpoint / deco wrist controller as an upgrade
- Easy fill, easy fit scrubber - choice of 2-3hr or 5-6+hr duration
- Hard plumbed DIN 1st stages
- Integrated BOV
- Minimal profile
- Not cylinder specific

Most importantly 'squaddie' proof!!!

Heres to dreaming

regards
Brad

Re: The perfect rebreather

Other ideas:
  • A secondary smaller scrubber that the gas can be directed to in case of primary scrubber is depleted.
  • Software in handset should be able to measure pressure in loop during +/- test
  • More graphics instead of numbers on display (tank pressures, estimated scrubber life and deco countdown)
  • Memory should log the mv from the O2 sensors and use the history to alert diver when danger of depleted sensor or abnormality.
  • Handsets should be more slim, the current ones are way too bulky!
  • On-line diagnostics, the factory should be able to connect to the Rebreather computers through the internet to perform diagnostics if problems occur. Here, patches could also be made to the software and in case of a accident, the factory can help user/local authorities answer questions of what went wrong.
I'm sure more are coming.....

I can see it now,

--Unrealistic idea--
Authorities: OK Mr Manufacturer, what does the diagnostic download tell us?
Manufacturer: It says the controller ****ed up and killed him.
Authorities: Hands behind your back now sir, you're coming with us.
Manufacturer: It's a fair cop, society is to blame.

--Reality--
Authorities: OK Mr Manufacturer, what does the diagnostic download tell us?
Manufacturer: It says the equipment was working perfectly.
Authorities: Thankyou very much sir, on your way now.
Manufacturer: (Wipes brow and keeps quiet)

Cheers,
Jason.

Re: The perfect rebreather

A perfect rebreather is... One that works each and every single time I want to go diving without any fault!

After almost 10 years of diving Rebreather (almost) exclusively on a lot of different units, there just isn't even a handful of units that fit that requirement yet.

Re: The perfect rebreather

What about a different way to remove the CO2.

Something like a filter, so less bulky and no need to refill.
