Overall Weighting Problem

Hey there fellow RBers,
I haven't gotten one yet but have been following my buddy, H2OSensei, who just picked up a new Evo unit. That seems like a good choice. One thing though, he's not quite got the same god given girth that I possess these days.... and he seems to be having trouble staying down, weight-wise. That may be a problem for a bigger guy like me. What additional options are there for external weighting to assist in this basic bouyancy problem? (Please don't start with the standard, get out there and lose some weight, porko... my wife has already alluded to that fact...)

Thanks for any input, as I'd hate to pick up the evo unit, only to find that I gotta dive in chain-mail suit....

Thanks, Divingron

Re: Overall Weighting Problem

I dive an Inspiration and wear about 5 lbs lead. 3lbs soft weights in the bottom of the plastic case and 2 lbs up top in the weight pouch. Shouldn't be such a big deal, even if you need more weight. The same principle applies.

Re: Overall Weighting Problem

Ahhhh Steve, the master of the obvious.... once again I have failed to communicate properly.... just like the guy on the radio who screams... JUST LOOK at this....

my bad.... yep, weight belts are good, and yes I can properly weigh myself down but what I was ATTEMPTING to do, (before my brain turned OFF...) was to seek opinions as to trim weights that go upwards on the torso area.

In addition to being "heavy" I have the typical weigh-builders problem, large upper body, small lower limbs (gads did I have to say it like that???) but currently, I wear about six to eight pounds in my shoulder trim areas on my current BC setup. The evo unit that I was veiwning didn't seem to have nuch in the way of trim pouches up there..... so my buddy, who is smaller than I was getting creative about adding weights to his upper body area.

Did I help out any with my rebuttal?

At least let me say, THANK YOU for your discretion Steve....

Re: Overall Weighting Problem

Hey Randy,

Thanks for the comment about the soft weights inside. Do you find that that causes any concern? Meaning, is that OK to place weights INSIDE the unit? I know soft weights are extremely flexible, but is that OK, couldn't they become problematic with all the various hoses and wiring that is running thru there? Do you really want added weights inside the unit?

Re: Overall Weighting Problem

If you are having trim problems, then a great tool is a DUI weight harness. It allows you to move your entire weight system up or down for trim adjustment. Works great.

Re: Overall Weighting Problem

I use a ss backplate with a 5 kg (lbs??) p-weight. No Problems and i don´t use the weight pocket on the top of the case.

I haven't had any problems with the soft weights. Hard weights could cause some problems inside. Ocassionally, I will find myself somewhere in the world where they don't have soft weights, and then I will take a hard weight and wrap it in some type of soft cloth to protect it from banging around and damaging anything.

Re: Overall Weighting Problem

HI,

Here is what I do, when I forgot my weights at home.

Empty everything (BC, counterlung etc...) and then do duck dive to the depth of 10-12M. At this depth, I will be stable, and then I pumped diluent to my counterlung then breath normally.

Regards,

BB

Re: Overall Weighting Problem

You can fit different thickness back plates to the unit to adjust the weighting. Then if needed put a correct size weight in the slot of the back plate. You can adjust the trim by changing the placement of the weight in the slot.
