What makes a rebreather a rebreather?

From time to time I have been quite impressed with truly novel designs and products in the rebreather world...kudos to those who are on the forefront of innovation.

I wanted to pose an interesting qiestion however...what makes a rebreather a rebreather? For every one truly innovative product, there are at least a half dozen 'rebreathers' that claim to be 'in production', yet have all the same guts as another unit..hence its not a new unit. I am all for tinkering, and with all of the plug and play with aftermarket parts and such it is quite easy to arrive at what could be marketed as a 'new rebreather'....but its not.

To those out there who are going down the long road, securing intellectual property, and leveraging that to ramp up production...I commend you. To the rest..I ask, is this tinkering and arriving at 'new rebreathers' what is keeping the overall industry #'s so low?

Re: What makes a rebreather a rebreather?

I think the main reason people build their own is that commercial rebreathers, at this time in history, are junk.
They are over designed in some ways, under designed in others, most of them are too complex, sensitive to floodint, way too bulky, have too many failure points, too expensive, you could go on and on.
On the other hand, many have one or two good parts, a clever innovation, a convenient feature, that are not found on others. A clever tinkerer will pick and choose, and come up with something that fits their needs.

Ten years from now, buying a good rebreather will not be difficult.
Right now, however, it is sad to say, if you want a really good Rebreather, you have to build it yourself.

Re: What makes a rebreather a rebreather?

what ****ing rubish i can count a hand full of home builder that have done it to build some thing that is tailered to the needs and had the ability to do it well.
most that i know of includding my self did it decause they had some ability but more because they where intrested in learning and a challenge.
what makes you think 10 years will iron out the problems with phisics
water ingres will be a problem but that again takes more space
there is only so much space you can fit this type of system into because of the phisics and dynamics of the respotory system
please if your so much more clever that all the other manufactures/ home builders out there please share the secrate of how your doing it so cheap
kind regards john routley

Re: What makes a rebreather a rebreather?

I could not agree more, the cost is what keeps more people from diving more safe on a rebreather.
Rebreathers are the cutting edge and just like nitrox and trimix will take some time to become the norm, I remember when they called mix diving gases vodoo gas. LOL
