Wish to cave dive in Mexico

Hi Guys,

I will be in the US sometime in Oct or Nov on business (yes I do work sometimes!) and was thinking of going down to mexico for some cave diving.

If I do it I would do it on Boris.

My questions are is that feasible? Are there caves there that are diveable on a Rebreather. The way some talk it sounds like all the caves are very shallow and up and down - are there any deeper caves?

As I will be there on my own (unless anyone wants to join ) I need a good outfit there that will take me around, get me sorted with supplies and show me the caves etc etc.

Anyone recommend a good outfit over there?

I would love to do some big dives there if there is an outfit (or individual) interested.

If anyone is heading down there and is interested in joining my dates are very flexible (anytime from July through to December!)

Cheers
Mike

Hi Mike, off there next week so I'll try and do a recce for you. Any specific questions then please pm me. Possibly interested in a return visit later on in the year (hopefully all Megged up by then - (and FFM Ported also )). All depends whether I can get the time off from 'contracting'

BTW made contact with someone on the list who has a Rebreather friendly set up here in Ukraine - diving in Crimea. Haven't had the chance to meet him yet but sounds very promising - I think Martin Robson is coming over here to dive with him at the end of the month. I haven't got a unit as awitying for the Meg to arrive, but will definitely get some diving done over here if possible.

A thought anyway

Re: Wish to cave dive in Mexico

yo Mike

Them caves in Mexico are a bit up and down, that is true. There are some that are more rebreather friendly then others, Taj Mahal being particular "bad" for rebreathers. Most caves fall more or less into three depth categories.

20 - 45 feet with Nohoch, Dos Ojos, Chak Mol, Grand Cenote, Eden etc.

45 - 70 feet with Maya Blue, Naharon, Temple of Doom, Vacaha, Tortuga etc.

180 feet plus with sinkhole Angelita but no cave, the Pit with no access, Blue Abyss with a 3000 foot arrival swim as well as the deep caves of the central Yucatan Sabak Ha, Chacdzinik Che, Kankirixche, etc.

As for Boris tanks we have some in our store.

Greetings
Matt

Re: Wish to cave dive in Mexico

Hi Dr Mike,

my experiences are on http://solocavediver.com/mex04.html, mex0902.txt,
fulltriplog.txt, and mexico.txt. My favourite dive of all was the traverse from Cenote Calimba to Cenote Pabilanny (ca 200 minutes round trip) which is Dive 18 of fulltriplog.txt.
That one would be great fun to do as a rebreather dive I reckon, but you definitely need a map of the system, you can get one from Bil Phillips (see http://www.speleotech.com) though for accomodation I prefer the DeRosas (www.cenotes.com).
Don't do anything I wouldn't do (gives you a fair amount of freedom )

cheers,

Charles.

I would not count on or use Bill Phillips,(excellant cave diver and Instructor) being you are traveling from so far he can be very unreliable, He would leave you flat for a student, more money in teaching than guiding! Pro tec is the only way to go IMHO They are it when it comes to Rebreather diving. There are a lot of good guides and a lot of good OC cavers in Mexico but when it comes to CCRS and equitment they are it. If your buisness in USA puts you near NYC there is a bunch of cool stuff here too.

Hey Mike,

Let me know exactly when you will come down to Mexico and what you need down here and we will arrange for you. Even some deep stuff can be arranged around here or around Merida.
Cheers,
