Re: Megs in Mexico - A Trip Report

Great report. I just got back from Mexico, and found the same kind of bullSh-t as you. Lots of running around trying to set things up, and mexican's who can't or wont help. Its nice when things come togather and workout. I know that diving is great and I would love to have the water close, but the Government, and the way the whole contry is run is well, Socialist. Rich, Rich, Rich, or Poor Poor Poor, and nothing in between.

Re: Megs in Mexico - A Trip Report

Brian and Heather,

Sorry that you had that kind of experience.
I would have not been happy with that kind of experience myself.

There are few options for cave divers heading down to Mexico.
Connie, Steve Gerard, Pro-Tec Mexico and others will help set up and run you around for the day or the time period that you are there. Yes, you pay for people to pick you up, for lunch and escorting you around but they know the systems, have the keys, how to get you in, and all the little details that bites visitors. Most people go down on a trip and see how the show works and then venture out on their own; I admire your independence to get out and rough it.

In reference to the police- they are not your friend and bribery is very common in Mexico. If possible arrive in the morning or afternoon and most hotels will pick up there guests to help stop this kind of problem. Traveling at night is always a no.. no… If you head Southern Mexico you will run into Federal troops and that can get exciting. You are totally right about Mexico missing its middle class. If they could ever develop a middle class then it would provide a stabilizing factor for the country. However ten percent of the population owning 90% of the land helps no one.

I have never heard nothing but glowing reports about Villa De Rosa but after your experience you need to express what happened. Thank you for sharing it with me. If you have contacts at NACD or others you might want to advise of your experience. It is important for our training agencies to know how you were treated while visiting other facilities.

We could do with a trip contact for Mexico. Let’s see if anyone wants to come forth and make suggests.

Great write up and I hope a lot of people can learn from it.
I will be down in Cozumel in July.

Regards, Andrew

Re: Megs in Mexico - A Trip Report

Andrew-

I've done Mexico a couple of times before- once as part of a Nohoch expedition, and once I just sort of cut out of a "fluff" trip to Cozumel for a couple of days, took the ferry over to Playa, rented a car, rented some doubles and went diving, another day I drove to the ruin site at Coba- so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect (or so I thought).

The reason we decided to strike out on our own is this- with 10 years worth of cave diving experience each, the LAST thing either of us wanted was some "guide" to hold our hands. Additionally- when I travel to a foreign country, the last thing I want is the sterilized "all inclusive hotel picks me up at the airport" type of experience. I'd rather do it on my own and take my lumps than have some canned package group deal.

As for our experience with Nancy DeRosa- in addition to Brian's comments about the fills- I had another joyful interlude with her when I went to check out. Specifically, the door to her domicile (which is right next to the office) was open- she was chatting with someone and saw me walk up, look in the empty office, and knock. She then continued her conversation despite my waving at her, etc. Another group (being led by the guy she was chatting with)came upstairs, ready to head out- she invited them in and I followed. Six of us proceeded to stand there in the middle of her living room whiel she chatted for another 10 minutes. I finally manged to check out after the other group headed out. Customer service is FAR from being her strongpoint. She made it patently clear that I was lowest priority to her. In addition, while the room was clean and what we expected, and the food was good, as was the Mexican staff- the accomodations were completely unacceptable due to the random (large) piles of dog feces which appeared (one at the top of the stairs to the rooftop bar). I will never NEVER stay there again, nor will I recommend the operation to ANYONE.

Re: Megs in Mexico - A Trip Report

Maybe Im just upset at the resent mexico crap that I and others have gone though. One thing that came to mind in dealing with the non-freindly, ignore you mexicans is to give them a old cancelled credit card. Than check out would be no problem. Of course spending time in a mexican jail would also rate low on my travel experience.

There's probably a reason they send her into exile.
