![]() | Iron Ore Mine Diving Accident Being a Newfie, I head of this today from my dad: " A 51-year-old man from the United States, who had been diving in the flooded mine shafts of Wabana, Bell Island, was pronounced dead today at the Dr. Walter Templeman hospital on the island after an incident in No. 2 mine. The cause of death is under investigation by the RCMP. No further details will be released until next of kin have been notified. The man was a member of an international team of divers taking part in a 12-day exploration project in the abandoned and flooded iron ore mines. The team was made up of experienced cave divers from Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and Egypt. The project was titled Mine Quest in which artifacts and structures like train tracks, were being explored, and photographed. According to the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Society, Bell Island became prominent in the international mining and steel industry over a period of mining operations from 1895-1966. " Does anyone have any credible information? Thanks

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Iron Ore Mine Diving Accident Deep sympathy for those involved... I have to say I disagree with one thing the newspaper said; namely, the bit about him being an "experienced cavediver with 130 dives....". 130 dives is not that much experience (and don't let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise). Whether that had aught to do with the accident, is another matter. All the best, Charles Read. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Iron Ore Mine Diving Accident Thanks for your thoughts and sympathy... Joe was a great mate and an excellent addition to the team. We are pushing on and today -- having fulfilled our original mandate -- will be pushing on laying new line in both shallow and deep sections of the mine (12 and 40 metres respectively). FYI... this project features both CCR and OC exposures, with OC dives restricted to the shallow passages. CCRs used on this project include Inspirations, Megladons, and Oroborus units.
