My condolences to his family. I would realy like to learn more about the procedures used on this expedition and why he was alone. I've also heard that he was dealing with an internal ilness. The last I heard medicals are usualy required on such dives.

Where you will find a medical opinion concerning Joe's death from a team member who is also an MD specializing in hyperbaric medicine. One team member, who is also an inspector with the RCMP, took charge of Joe's gear and the RCMP is currently investigating that equipment. The team was visited by the Atlantic coordinator of the RCMP dive recovery team who spent a few hours running through our dive procedures and emergency protocols. I am unsure when his report will be available (freedom of information act) but he seemed satisfied that our practices were valid. If you are mounting an expedition and need some help drawing up S&Ps, I'd be glad to offer some suggestions. One thing that we found helped our day to day operations was restricting depth and penetration for OC divers...

Sounds like a very logical reconstruction of events given the evidence.

Know you by fame and someone else of the members personally I never had any doubt about the organisation.
Really thanks for sharing what I think is one of the most detailed reports I ever read.

Re: Iron Ore Mine Diving Accident

That's terribly sad, but, if indeed there was metastasized cancer present then, as hard it is to say, I suspect that Joe would prefer to pass the way he did rather than from the cancer.

Metastasized lung cancer is essentially always fatal and usually within a relatively short period of time. It is not a pleasant way to meet your end either; I've had acquaintenances who have gone that way.

May Joe rest in peace and condolances be to family and friends; Joe was a lightly active user on my forum, although I had never met him - he had planned to come dive the "O" with me at some point, but sadly never made it.
