David Shaws last dive

I found this news in the net:
http://www.sundaytimes.news.com.au/c...5E1702,00.html

Did they really show the video footage from the helmet cam?

Yes. Well some of the footage anyway. The programme is a good one that looks at the story of peoples lives, and as such wasn't designed to be an analysis of the diving. Quite a sad tale really. His family were amazingly stoic.

Simon Mitchell did an excellent analysis and presented it at OzTek a few months ago. Very interesting. Particularly when one looks at the aftermarket parts that Dave was using.

Is there any possibility that someone caught it on harddrive/tape and could share it?

Is there somekind of written report of the Oztek presentation?

Steve, I invited Simon over twice, but so far he's a no-show.
Is there any chance you could wrangle a transcript out of him for publication here?
I asume he didn't make the presentation up as he went along, and his initial
analysis on Dive-Oz was excellent. I would really like to hear what he said at OzTek, even more so as he has a way to make it easily understood by layman.

I managed to catch Simon Mitchell's presentation at Oztek, It was a superb presentation, especialy considering that Simon put it together in 3 days.
If someone has a Transcript I'd also be interested.

Simon is a very busy guy but I will ask.

I have the programme on VHS (PAL) tape although I have NO IDEA how to convert it into any other format (and don't have an analogue capture card).

The programme was primarily about how his family, and the others involved in the dive, have coped with his death, rather than being an investigation into the technicalities of what actually happened.

There is however a fair bit of footage fror the actual dive both above and under the water.

The underwater footage (from his helmet mounted camera) showing his hands trying to free himself from the line was to me disturbing. I'm a caver myself and that feeling when neither the line or your hands will cooperate was chillingly familiar.

I believe that Simon Mitchell will be publishing the Oztek report somewhere in the literature although I can't remember where.

Simon is in the process of completing his training as an anaesthetist at present which is very demanding of time both at work and at home (exam study). Having been down this path myself (I became a virtual hermit for 5 years) I'm not surprised he's less involved in internet forums than he was.

I am hopeful once he's finished we'll all be able to benefit from his input again.

MarkK is an unknown quantity at this point
I believe that Dr. Simon is planning to publish a detailed article on this accident in one of the medical journals later this year in conjunction with a South African colleague. Should be very interesting. He did comment briefly today on DiveOz, summarising some key issues that had been identified - worth a look.
