PRESS RELEASE

Date:August 17, 2006

Contact: Coast Guard Public Affairs
(310) 732-7352
Local Agencies Find Missing Diver

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - A 40-year old male diver that had been missing near the south end of the Los Angeles Channel since yesterday, was found this morning near the wreck three miles off shore where he had been diving.

In a joint effort, local agencies started searching for the missing diver yesterday afternoon.

Involved in the search were assets from the Coast Guard, the LA County Sherrif's Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, LA Port Police, and LA Police.

Today, the Incident Command and agency assets were staged out of the Coast Guard base in San Pedro where the the divers body was also brought and delivered to the county coroner.

The Coast Guard had received a report yesterday, of a missing diver from the vessel "Salty V". The Coast Guard initially responded to the call with a helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a 25-foot Response Boat from Station Los Angeles-Long Beach. The Coast Guard was joined in the search by the other agencies and continued operations until dusk last night.

The cause of death and identification of the diver will be confirmed by the County Coroner.

Re: Los Angeles Diver Death..

The boat is the PSalty V out of San Pedro. The trip was a rebreather charter by one of the local dive shops. The plan was to do two dives on the USS Moody (145') and one dive on the Olympic II (95'). From the time of entry into the water it seems they could have done this.

He was reportedly (not confirmed) pinned or trapped under the wreck. There has been no analysis of gear to my knowledge. He was found this morning.

Psalty, I don't know if there is a Salty V, I do know the two names are routinely used interchangeably for the the same boat, i.e. a 6 pack based out of Ports 'O' call San Pedro.
