Jefferson County sheriff's investigators have released the name of a scuba diving victim.

They say 45 year old Lawrence Crom of New Jersey is the diver who lost his life near Wellesley Island on Friday.

Crom surfaced from a dive on his own power but was unresponsive when observed by several nearby boaters, an investigator said.

He was rushed to River Hospital in Alexandria Bay where resuscitation efforts failed.

The cause of death remains under investigation. An autopsy was conducted but results are not yet available. Toxicology test results are also pending.

Crom was diving with a partner, the investigator said.

The incident happened near Coast Guard facilities on Wellesley Island. It's where where the freighter Roy Jodrey lies in 160 feet of water after running onto a shoal and sinking in 1974.

Crom and his partner were diving the shipwreck, investigators say.

I'm sure he is not. The "x" was probably a "false start". Jonathan is not a callous person, sometimes we run into difficulties when multitasking.

Thanks for asking. I was thinking similar but could not find the right words to ask so I just invoked the old rule about "if you don't have anything nice to say". Glad my mother's teaching proved to be correct and now things are clearer.

Early information suggests he was diving a Kiss, switched to his bailout at approximately 100' on ascent, took "2 breaths" and then made an emergency ascent for the surface.

Small correction, the Jodrey lies in 220'-230' of water. The very top of the wreck (the crow's nest) is at 150' or so.
