C02 Breakthrough & Caked up sofnolime

Hey guys,

has anyone experienced a nearly total solidifying of their scrubber?
I guess I'll take this back to the start.

On Monday we decided to go diving instead of drinking (being St Patricks day that was pretty unusual in itself)

Filled the Inspo scrubber with new sofnolime same as always, 1st dive HMS Drake, 18m for 40 mins water temp 8 celsius. Nice relaxing dive, little current.

90 mins surface interval

Then SS Lochgarry 30m for 30 mins, water temp was 9 celsius. about 15 mins into the dive breathing felt forced & swimming seemed to require an awful lot of effort for very little movement. Back to the shot line & made our ascent without any more incident.

When I got home I opened up the scrubber to find that the sofnolime had virtually turned solid right up the centre of the scrubber, the only loose granuals to be found were the 1" or so from the outer walls of the canister.
There was no excess water in the bottom of the scrubber apart from the usual condensation & slobbers Certainly nothing to suggest enough moisture to stick the granuals together.

Thinking back over the dive I'm pretty sure I had a touch of Hypercapnia, a few aches & pains remain but nothing too serious.

I am at a loss to explain why the scrubber went the way it did. Anybody out there have any ideas.

All feedback welcomed,

Stephen

Water vapour and condensation on granules. Perfectly normal to have 'clumping'.

Yep, mine is also allways clumped after full use. I guess it might differ depending on how tigh you have packed the can. I pack mine as tight as I can get...

My question doesn't really have anything to do with the sorb, but I'm wondering if you bailed out when you noticed that something was wrong with the Rebreather??

I've had the clumping, that doesn't bother me but 90%ish of the sofo turning into a solid block was a bit worrying

It wasn't until I analysed the dive from the comfort of my home that I remembered the laboured breathing. At the time I just put it down to being out of breath

I've had upto 70% ish in one block. It was a 2 1/2 hr dive in the Norweigen Fjords. Very cold and long, lots of time for condesation to form and glue the granules together.

Good comment. My cave instructor said if the thought of bailout enters your head during a dive you should follow that instinct. It may save your life.
